Krugerrands · Quoted Above Melt, Never As Scrap · Bedfordview

A Krugerrand is not scrap. So we never price it like scrap.

Every 1 oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold, which means its worth has a hard, public floor: the melt value below, live. Our quote is made coin by coin against that figure, always above our scrap floor, and you get it in writing before anything is decided.

The melt value, live: the number no honest quote can ignore

CoinFine-gold contentMelt value now*
1 oz Krugerrand 31.10 g fine (33.93 g gross) R68 209
1/2 oz Krugerrand 15.55 g fine R34 105
1/4 oz Krugerrand 7.78 g fine R17 052
1/10 oz Krugerrand 3.11 g fine R6 821

*Worked at the reference fine-gold price of R2 193/g, checked 25 July 2026; the live figure loads on this page and refreshes daily. Melt is the metal alone: Krugerrands are liquid, recognised worldwide, and usually trade at a premium over melt, which is why each coin is quoted individually. Ask for today’s quote, no obligation.

What we check, in front of you

A genuine 1 oz Krugerrand weighs 33.93 grams, is struck in 22 ct crown gold (91.67% fine), and has been minted since 1967. On the desk the coin goes onto the calibrated scale and under the same instruments as everything else we buy, verified without damaging it, because a Krugerrand’s value depends on staying exactly as it is. Proof strikes and collectable years are a separate conversation: where a coin carries collector value above bullion, we say so rather than melt-quote it. Fractional coins, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 oz, are quoted on the same basis, proportional to their fine content.

Selling more than coins? The gold page covers jewellery and scrap at the published rate, and the worth page covers bars, kilos and ounces.

The published rate

The standing rules, coins included.

your payout = grams× karat purity× live fine-gold price× 0.90

Check us before you arrive. Weigh the piece at home and run the number yourself. A kitchen scale gets you the ballpark, not the last decimal, so on the desk our XRF analyser confirms the karat and our calibrated scale confirms the weight, in front of you. You get the figure in writing before anything is agreed. We buy outright: this is a sale, not a loan.

It is safe to bring it in

Carrying gold to an unfamiliar address is the real hesitation, so here is the honest answer. The Paragon is a secured diamond-industry building: armed security, access control at entry, and secure underground parking, so you walk from your car to the desk without stepping onto the street. The South African offices of GIA and EGL operate under the same roof. Viewings are private and by appointment, one client at a time. See how visiting works.

Where your gold actually goes

It does not disappear into someone else’s melting pot. Gold refineries operate in this same building, and that is where your metal is melted and refined; it then comes back upstairs to the SADPMR-inspected workshop where our own jewellery is made. Stones we buy are re-set into new pieces, not discarded. Reclaimed gold carries a fraction of the footprint of newly mined gold, so buying it back keeps metal that already exists in circulation instead of sitting in a drawer.

Krugerrand questions, answered straight

How much is a Krugerrand worth today?

Never less than its gold. A 1 oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce, 31.1035 grams, of fine gold, so its floor is the day’s fine-gold price times 31.1035, the melt value in the table on this page, which updates from the live feed. On top of that, Krugerrands are liquid and recognised worldwide, so they usually change hands at a premium over melt.

We quote each coin individually against the live figure: send a photo or bring it in, and you get the number in writing, no obligation.

Do you pay the scrap rate for Krugerrands?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Our published less-10% rate is for gold that is going to be melted. A Krugerrand is not scrap: it is a minted, globally traded coin with certain purity and exact fine content, so it is quoted case by case against its melt value, always above our scrap floor. The same goes for other bullion coins and bars.

Where can I sell Krugerrands near me in Johannesburg?

Bedfordview, by appointment, in a secured diamond-industry building with armed security and underground parking, The Paragon, 1 Kramer Road, where the South African offices of GIA and EGL share the roof. The coin is weighed and checked in front of you, quoted in writing against the live gold price, and settled by FICA-compliant bank transfer. If you cannot come to us, insured courier works the same way.

How do I know my Krugerrand is real?

The arithmetic is the first filter: a genuine 1 oz Krugerrand weighs 33.93 grams, is struck in 22 ct crown gold, and contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold, deviations in weight are the classic giveaway. On the desk we confirm weight on a calibrated scale and test the metal, without damaging the coin. If you are unsure, bring it in; verification costs nothing and you are under no obligation to sell.

Do you buy proof and collectable Krugerrands?

Yes, and those are exactly the coins that should never go anywhere near a melt price. Proof strikes and low-mintage years can carry collector value above bullion value, which is another case-by-case conversation with the coin in hand. Tell us what you have, and if a coin is worth more in the collector market than we can responsibly pay, we will say so.
