A pair, designed together

The rings you both wear every day for the rest of your lives should look like they were made for each other, because they were. When a pair is designed together, the metal matches exactly, the finishes complement, and the proportions are judged side by side rather than hoped to align. That is hard to achieve buying two rings off two trays, and effortless when one bench makes both. It is also the moment to decide how much each ring should carry: most couples weight the diamonds toward her band and keep his clean.

How a matched pair is balanced

  • Metal, the anchor. Both rings in the same platinum or the same 18k gold so they read as one set.
  • Width, sized to each hand. Hers often 1.5 to 3 mm, his often 4 to 7 mm, balanced so neither overpowers the other.
  • Finish, shared or deliberately contrasted. A common move is polished for her and brushed for him, in the same metal.
  • Diamonds, usually hers. A full or half eternity or a pave row on her band; his clean, or a single flush-set stone.

Matching to an engagement ring she already wears

If she already has an engagement ring, the pair starts from it. We design her wedding band to sit flush against the engagement ring, matching metal and profile, then design his to pair with hers. The result is an engagement ring and two wedding bands that all belong to the same family. This is exactly what our bridal set design is for, and it folds naturally into a custom commission.

His and hers wedding rings: common questions

What does a his and hers wedding ring set mean?

It means two wedding rings designed as a pair rather than chosen separately, so they share a visual language: the same metal, a complementary finish, and proportions that sit well side by side in photographs and in life. Hers is often diamond-set and slimmer, his cleaner and wider, but the link between them is deliberate. Making both on one bench is the surest way to get that harmony.

Do his and hers rings have to match exactly?

No, and they usually should not. The most elegant pairs are complementary, not identical: the same metal and a shared detail, but each ring sized in width and weight to the hand it sits on. A 2 mm diamond eternity for her and a 5 mm brushed band for him can clearly read as a set without being copies of each other. We balance the two so they belong together.

Can both rings have diamonds, or just hers?

Either. Most couples set diamonds in her band, a full or half eternity or a row of pave, and keep his clean, but a man who wants a stone can have one flush or bezel set so it survives daily wear. We will show you how diamonds on one or both rings change the balance of the pair before you decide.

Can you match a wedding band to an engagement ring she already has?

Yes. If she already wears an engagement ring, we design her wedding band to sit flush against it, matching metal, profile and any diamonds, then design his to pair with hers. This is how a his and hers set and an existing engagement ring become one coherent look. See our bridal set design.

Can you make a matched pair if we are not in Johannesburg?

Yes. Couples commission from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa. We size you both accurately, agree the pair by video and WhatsApp, and deliver insured and overnight nationwide, with certification and a written valuation for the diamonds.
