Diamonds & Engagement Rings · Cape Town & the Western Cape
Diamonds and engagement rings in Cape Town, direct from the cutting bench.
Plainly: Prodiam has no Cape Town showroom. We are a diamond cutting house in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, and we serve Cape Town the way our out-of-town clients have always bought: the diamond is viewed by live video and WhatsApp, the grade conversation happens stone-in-hand on our side, and the loose diamond or finished engagement ring arrives in the Western Cape by insured overnight courier. The advantage of buying this way is the price: a stone cut and sold direct from the bench carries a cutter-direct wholesale price that a Cape Town showroom counter, with its own landlord and stock-finance costs, cannot match. GIA-certified natural diamonds, polished to GIA Excellent cut grade, priced on application and quoted firm in rand before any work begins.

An honest word on "diamonds Cape Town"
Search for diamonds or engagement rings in Cape Town and most results are showroom counters in the city. We are not one of them, and we will not pretend to be. Prodiam is a South African diamond dealer and cutting house based in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, where the rough is bought, cut and polished in-house and sold direct. We have no Sea Point address and no Cape Town fitting room. What we have instead is a structurally shorter chain between the rough stone and your finger, and that is precisely what lets a Cape Town buyer pay less, not more, for buying from out of town.
The Cape Town retail diamond market is largely importer-and-retailer based: a stone is typically bought in, marked up to carry the costs of a physical shopfront, and sold across a counter. Buying direct from the bench removes that retail layer. The wholesale-versus-retail pricing guide sets out the arithmetic; the short version is that the same GIA-Excellent stone commonly costs materially less direct from the cutter than across a Cape Town retail counter, and two days of insured overnight delivery is a small price to close the distance.
How a Cape Town purchase actually works
The whole process is built for a buyer who is fourteen hundred kilometres from the bench, and it is the same process our Cape Town clients have used for years:
- Brief by WhatsApp or email, shape, carat range, colour and clarity range, budget, deadline, and your Cape Town delivery address. Darren replies within 24 hours.
- View by video, not in a showroom, the GIA report PDF, high-resolution loupe photography and a 360-degree video come first; then a live video viewing on WhatsApp or Zoom with the stone on the daylight tray under the microscope, so you see it exactly as you would across a counter.
- Decide, then settle in ZAR, fee-free EFT in rand, or card via Yoco or PayFast. We quote a firm rand figure before any work begins; nothing proceeds until you approve it.
- Insured overnight delivery to the Western Cape, the stone or finished ring is dispatched the next business day after funds clear, jewellery-grade insured to invoice value, with live tracking and signature on receipt.
For an engagement ring there is one extra step before delivery: we post a free sizing-ring set to your Cape Town address, or you courier us an existing ring that fits, so the finished piece arrives at the right size. Custom design happens entirely by video, see custom engagement rings for how a bespoke commission is briefed, drawn and built remotely.

Diamonds in Cape Town: common questions
Do you have a Cape Town showroom?
No, and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. Prodiam operates one viewing room, in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, in the same building as the Procut DCW cutting works. We do not have a Cape Town address or a Sea Point counter. Cape Town buyers work with us remotely: the viewing and grade conversation happen by live video and WhatsApp, and the stone or finished piece arrives by insured overnight courier. The reason we do not open a Cape Town showroom is deliberate, a satellite store would add retail-style overheads and erode the cutter-direct wholesale price, which is the whole point of buying from us. Most Cape Town clients say the remote route is the right trade-off once they see the price-per-carat difference.
How do Cape Town buyers view a diamond before buying?
In three ways, none of which need a showroom. First, the full GIA report PDF, proportions, the inclusion plot, the measurements, emailed before any settlement. Second, high-resolution loupe photography and a 360-degree video of the actual stone, also sent in advance. Third, a live video viewing on WhatsApp or Zoom where the diamond sits on the daylight tray under the microscope and Darren walks you through it, face-up, side-on and through the pavilion; you can ask anything you would ask across a counter. Most Cape Town buyers choose after the live viewing rather than before it. Start the conversation on the national remote-buying page or by WhatsApp.
How is the diamond or ring delivered to Cape Town?
By insured overnight courier, Brink’s, G4S or our nominated jewellery courier, depending on the value and the destination, from Bedfordview to your address in Cape Town or anywhere in the Western Cape. Overnight to the Cape Town metro and most Western Cape centres such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Somerset West, Hermanus and George; one to two business days to smaller towns. Delivery carries live tracking and a signature on receipt, and dispatch is the next business day after funds clear. For a finished engagement ring we can also arrange a sizing-ring set by post first, so the ring fits on arrival.
Is the diamond insured in transit to Cape Town?
Yes. Every shipment to Cape Town is jewellery-grade insured to its full invoice value while in transit, and that cover is included in the price, you do not pay separately for it. Additional cover above invoice value is available on request before dispatch. The courier provides live tracking and the parcel is released only against a signature, so the stone is covered and accounted for from the moment it leaves the Bedfordview bench until it is in your hands in the Western Cape.
Why buy diamonds from a Johannesburg cutting house instead of a Cape Town jeweller?
Because the chain between the rough stone and your finger is shorter from a cutting bench than from a showroom counter, and a shorter chain means a lower price. The Cape Town retail diamond market is largely importer-and-retailer based rather than cutter-direct, so a comparable GIA-Excellent stone typically carries a meaningful retail markup over the same stone supplied straight from the Bedfordview bench, published chain-retail markups run well above wholesale. Prodiam buys rough at De Beers DBCM viewings and SA tenders, cuts and polishes it in-house at Procut DCW, and sells the finished stone direct, so a Cape Town buyer pays a wholesale-direct price that a showroom carrying landlord, stock-finance and counter costs cannot match. Two days of insured overnight delivery and a video viewing close the geographic gap; the price gap stays in your favour.
What does a diamond cost in Cape Town through Prodiam?
There is no fixed price and no honest single figure, because a diamond is priced on its own four characteristics, carat weight, colour, clarity and cut grade, read against the Rapaport wholesale list, then the metal and setting for a finished piece. What we can say is structural: because the stone is cut and graded in-house rather than bought in and marked up, you pay a wholesale-direct price plus transparent making, not a retail premium, and being in Cape Town rather than Johannesburg changes nothing about that price. A near-colourless, eye-clean one-carat round brilliant is the most-requested specification, and cutter-direct removes the showroom markup on it. We quote a firm ZAR figure on application, before any work begins. The fastest way to see real, fully-landed ZAR pricing is the live diamond search.
