Buying loose diamonds in SA

Loose diamonds: common questions.

Where can I buy loose diamonds for sale in South Africa?

Prodiam sells loose diamonds direct from its cutting bench in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, and delivers insured overnight anywhere in South Africa, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein and beyond. Because the stones are cut in-house at Procut DCW rather than bought in from a wholesaler and marked up, the per-carat price is set at the bench, not at retail. Buy in person by appointment, or remotely after a live video viewing of the stone on the daylight tray.

Are loose diamonds cheaper than a diamond already set in a ring?

Almost always, yes. A loose diamond is priced on its own merits, carat, colour, clarity and cut, with no setting labour, no mounting metal and no retail markup folded in. Buying the loose stone first lets you verify the GIA certificate against the diamond, agree the price, and only then commission the setting. Prodiam can set the loose diamond you buy into a bespoke ring or pendant on the same bench, so the centre stone and the finished piece never leave one roof.

Do your loose diamonds come with a GIA certificate?

Yes. Every loose diamond is GIA or EGL certified, and the certificate PDF is emailed before any settlement. The GIA report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle, so you can match the inscription to the report under a loupe and run the number against gia.edu/report-check yourself. Every rough parcel is also Kimberley Process documented, so provenance is traceable from rough to polished stone.

How much do loose diamonds cost, and can I see the price?

Stones under roughly 1 carat or R 500 000 are listed with live ZAR pricing on this page. Larger and high-value stones list as “POA” on the public catalogue and are priced privately on request, or shown with full ZAR pricing on the trade portal once a wholesale account is approved. Pricing is benchmarked to the Rapaport list and quoted excl. VAT, wholesale-direct, because the stone is cut in-house rather than bought in.

Can I buy a loose diamond remotely if I am not in Johannesburg?

Yes. Most national buyers never set foot in Bedfordview. You receive the GIA report, high-resolution loupe photography and a 360° video, then a live video viewing of the stone under microscope. After FICA verification and ZAR EFT settlement, the diamond is dispatched insured overnight via Brink’s or G4S, with a 7-day Consumer Protection Act inspection window on unset stones.
