An honest word on "jewellery stores in Durban"
Search for jewellery stores, engagement rings or diamond rings in Durban and almost every result is a retail counter, in the Pavilion, Gateway, La Lucia, Musgrave or a coastal arcade. We are not one of them, and we will not pretend to be. Prodiam is a South African diamond dealer and cutting house based in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, where the rough is bought, cut and polished in-house and sold direct. Prodiam works in natural diamonds only. Do you have a shop or showroom in Durban?
No, and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. Prodiam operates one viewing room, in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, in the same building as the Procut DCW cutting works and the GIA South Africa office. We have no Durban shop, no Umhlanga counter and no Ballito branch. KwaZulu-Natal buyers work with us remotely: the viewing and the grade conversation happen by live video and WhatsApp, and the loose stone or finished piece arrives by insured overnight courier, or you fly up and collect in Bedfordview by appointment. Not opening a coastal showroom is deliberate, a satellite store would add retail-counter overheads and erode the cutter-direct wholesale price, which is the whole reason to buy from a cutting house rather than a high-street jeweller.
