An honest word on "jewellery stores in Durban"

Search for jewellery stores, engagement rings or diamond rings in Durban and almost every result is a retail counter, in the Pavilion, Gateway, La Lucia, Musgrave or a coastal arcade. We are not one of them, and we will not pretend to be. Prodiam is a South African diamond dealer and cutting house based in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, where the rough is bought, cut and polished in-house and sold direct. We have no Umhlanga address and no Ballito fitting room. What we have instead is a structurally shorter chain between the rough stone and your finger, and that is precisely what lets a Durban buyer pay less, not more, for buying from out of province.

Durban and the wider KZN coast are served almost entirely by retail jewellers rather than cutting houses: a stone is typically imported or bought in, marked up to carry the costs of a physical shopfront, and sold across a counter. Buying direct from the bench removes that retail layer. Our note on buying direct versus retail jewellers sets out the arithmetic; the short version is that the same GIA-Excellent stone commonly costs materially less direct from the cutter than across a Durban retail counter, and one night of insured overnight delivery is a small price to close the distance.

Why a Durban buyer uses a Johannesburg cutting house

South Africa’s diamond cutting industry sits almost entirely in Gauteng, concentrated in a few streets in Bedfordview around the De Beers rough viewings. That is a historical accident of where the rough is sold, and it means a KwaZulu-Natal buyer at a coastal retail counter is, structurally, buying from a chain that is at least one and often several layers downstream from the cutter. Prodiam is the cutter. The sister manufacturer D and D Diamonds CC, trading as Procut DCW, has been a De Beers DBCM Emerging Beneficiation Customer since 2019, buying rough at DBCM sights and SA tender houses, then cutting and polishing it in-house to GIA Excellent cut grade. You are buying one step from the rough, not several.

The practical upshot for a Durban couple is threefold. You pay a wholesale-direct price rather than a retail markup at the same grade. You get a stone polished for light return to GIA Excellent cut, not bought in on price alone. And the certificate is independent: GIA South Africa shares the Bedfordview building, so the GIA-certified diamond you approve on video is graded by the laboratory, not by the seller. None of that depends on standing at a counter in Umhlanga, which is why the remote route works so well for the coast.

How a Durban purchase actually works

The whole process is built for a buyer who is six hundred kilometres from the bench, and it is the same process our KwaZulu-Natal clients have used for years:

  • Brief by WhatsApp or email, shape, carat range, colour and clarity range, budget, deadline, and your Durban, Umhlanga or Ballito delivery address. Darren replies within 24 hours.
  • View by video, not in a shop, the GIA report PDF, high-resolution loupe photography and a 360-degree video come first; then a live video viewing on WhatsApp or Zoom with the stone on the daylight tray under the microscope, so you see it exactly as you would across a counter, face-up, side-on and through the pavilion.
  • Decide, then settle in ZAR, fee-free EFT in rand, or card via Yoco or PayFast. We quote a firm rand figure before any work begins; nothing proceeds until you approve it.
  • Insured overnight delivery to the coast, the stone or finished ring is dispatched the next business day after funds clear, jewellery-grade insured to invoice value, with live tracking and signature on receipt. Or fly to Bedfordview and collect by appointment.

For an engagement ring there is one extra step before delivery: we post a free sizing-ring set to your KZN address, or you courier us an existing ring that fits, so the finished piece arrives at the right size. Custom design happens entirely by video, see custom engagement rings for how a bespoke commission is briefed, drawn and built remotely.

Prodiam works in natural diamonds only. If you are weighing a natural stone against a simulant, we are happy to talk you through it fairly, the cubic zirconia versus diamond comparison explains the difference honestly, but Prodiam is the natural specialist and that is what we cut. Being in Durban rather than Johannesburg changes nothing about the price you pay or the grade you receive; the only difference is that the viewing is on a screen and the hand-over is by armoured courier rather than across a counter.

The full mechanics, couriers, transit times, FICA, the Consumer Protection Act distance-sale window and ring sizing, are set out on buying from anywhere in South Africa. If you do find yourself in Gauteng, the Bedfordview viewing room is where the same stones and finished pieces can be seen in person by appointment. When you are ready, run the live diamond search to see fully-landed ZAR prices, browse current loose diamonds, or send a brief and Darren will come back within 24 hours.

Diamonds in Durban: common questions

Do you have a shop or showroom in Durban?

No, and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. Prodiam operates one viewing room, in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, in the same building as the Procut DCW cutting works and the GIA South Africa office. We have no Durban shop, no Umhlanga counter and no Ballito branch. KwaZulu-Natal buyers work with us remotely: the viewing and the grade conversation happen by live video and WhatsApp, and the loose stone or finished piece arrives by insured overnight courier, or you fly up and collect in Bedfordview by appointment. Not opening a coastal showroom is deliberate, a satellite store would add retail-counter overheads and erode the cutter-direct wholesale price, which is the whole reason to buy from a cutting house rather than a high-street jeweller.

What are the options for buying engagement rings in Durban through Prodiam?

Two routes, neither of which needs a Durban shopfront. The remote route is the one most KwaZulu-Natal clients use: you brief us by WhatsApp, view candidate stones by GIA report PDF, loupe photography and a live video viewing, approve the diamond and the design, settle in rand, and the finished engagement ring is couriered to your Durban, Umhlanga or Ballito address insured and overnight. The in-person route is to fly to Johannesburg and view the stones at the Bedfordview viewing room by appointment, roughly 25 minutes from OR Tambo, then have the ring couriered or collect it once it is finished. Either way the ring is designed and built on the Bedfordview bench, set with a GIA-certified natural diamond polished to GIA Excellent cut grade, and quoted firm in ZAR before any work begins.

How is a diamond or ring delivered to Durban, Umhlanga or Ballito?

By insured overnight courier, Brink’s, G4S or our nominated jewellery courier, depending on value and destination, from Bedfordview to your address anywhere in KwaZulu-Natal. Overnight to the Durban metro and the main coastal centres such as Umhlanga, Ballito, Hillcrest, Pinetown, Westville, Amanzimtoti and Pietermaritzburg; one to two business days to smaller KZN towns and the South Coast and North Coast interior. Delivery carries live tracking and a signature on receipt, and dispatch is the next business day after funds clear. For a finished engagement ring we can post a free sizing-ring set to your KZN address first, so the ring fits the moment it arrives.

Is the diamond insured in transit to KwaZulu-Natal?

Yes. Every shipment to KwaZulu-Natal is jewellery-grade insured to its full invoice value while in transit, and that cover is included in the price, you do not pay separately for it. Additional cover above invoice value is available on request before dispatch. The courier provides live tracking and the parcel is released only against a signature, so the stone is covered and accounted for from the moment it leaves the Bedfordview bench until it is in your hands in Durban, Umhlanga or anywhere on the coast.

Why buy from a Johannesburg cutting house instead of a Durban jewellery store?

Because the chain between the rough stone and your finger is shorter from a cutting bench than from a retail counter, and a shorter chain means a lower price at the same grade. Durban and the KZN coast are served almost entirely by retail jewellery stores rather than cutting houses: a stone is typically imported or bought in, marked up to carry the shopfront, and sold across a counter. Prodiam buys rough at De Beers DBCM sights and South African tender houses, cuts and polishes it in-house at Procut DCW (a De Beers DBCM Emerging Beneficiation Customer since 2019), and sells the finished stone direct. So a Durban buyer pays a wholesale-direct price that a coastal showroom carrying landlord, stock-finance and counter costs cannot match. A live video viewing and one night of insured overnight delivery close the geographic gap, while the price advantage stays in your favour.

What does a diamond cost in Durban through Prodiam?

There is no fixed price and no honest single figure, because a diamond is priced on its own four characteristics, carat weight, colour, clarity and cut grade, read against the Rapaport wholesale list, then converted from dollars to rand and carried at the day’s exchange rate, with 15% VAT added, plus the metal and making for a finished piece. What we can say is structural: because the stone is cut and graded in-house rather than bought in and marked up, you pay a wholesale-direct price plus transparent making, not a retail premium, and being in Durban rather than Johannesburg changes nothing about that price. A near-colourless, eye-clean one-carat round brilliant is the most-requested specification on the coast, and cutter-direct removes the showroom markup on it. We quote a firm ZAR figure on application, before any work begins. The fastest way to see real, fully-landed rand pricing is the live diamond search.
