Sell gold to Prodiam · Bedfordview, Johannesburg
Sell your gold to the bench that refines it.
Most places that buy gold have to send it away to be refined, so they quote you one blind number well under the real price and keep the gap. Prodiam is a working cutting house and refiner in Bedfordview. We confirm your karat on our own scale, price the metal against the day’s gold spot, and show you every rand of the working before you decide.
The no-downside part
Ask for the number. Worst case, you keep your gold.
An indicative valuation costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. We tell you what your gold is worth against the live spot, show you the karat and the margin, and if you would rather hold onto it or sell it elsewhere, that is entirely fine, you walk away knowing the honest number. We would genuinely rather you compared us than felt rushed. Bring any other written offer and we will price it like-for-like; if we cannot beat it, we will tell you so bluntly.
What we buy
If it is gold, in almost any form, we buy it.
Gold jewellery
Rings, chains, bracelets, earrings, pendants, signet rings. Worn, dated, odd single earrings, out of fashion, it makes no difference to the metal. 9 ct, 14 ct, 18 ct, 22 ct, 24 ct, yellow, white or rose.
Broken & scrap gold
Snapped chains, bent bands, clasps, gold from a broken setting, dental gold, melted lumps. It is weighed and assayed like any other gold; there is no penalty for it being broken.
Gold coins & bullion
Krugerrands, gold bars, granules, minted coins. Priced on their fine-gold content against the LBMA spot on the day. (Numismatic collector premiums are a separate conversation, tell us what you have.)
Gold with diamonds in it
A gold ring holding a natural diamond is two assets. We price the metal against spot and the stone against the Rapaport sheet, and pay you on both, separately and transparently.
One thing we do not do: buy raw or unwrought gold from the public. That is tightly controlled under South African law and rightly so. We deal in refined gold, jewellery, coins, bullion and scrap, and we hold the licences to refine it.

How selling works
From your drawer to cleared funds, four steps.
- 01
Weigh it and photograph it
Send a photo and the weight (a kitchen scale is fine for a ballpark) through the buy-back form or WhatsApp. Note the karat if it is stamped, 9 ct, 18 ct, 750, 375. If you are not sure, we confirm it on our scale.
- 02
Get an honest indicative figure
We reply with a rand range benchmarked to the LBMA gold-spot rate on the day, with the karat, weight and margin assumptions written out. Free, no obligation, no pressure.
- 03
Bring it in or send it insured
Come to the Bedfordview viewing room by appointment, or send it via insured Brink’s courier. We confirm the karat and weight on our own scale in front of you and issue a firm offer.
- 04
Cleared funds in about 72 hours
On acceptance we settle by FICA-compliant bank transfer, typically cleared within 72 hours for South African sellers. Full paperwork, no envelope cash.
Selling gold in South Africa
Frequently asked questions.
How do I sell gold in South Africa for a fair price?
Sell it to a buyer who prices against the live gold spot and shows you the working, not one who quotes a single blind number. Prodiam is a Bedfordview cutting house and refiner: we confirm the karat and weight on our own scale, value the metal against the day’s LBMA gold-spot rate in rand, and show you the margin taken off. Send a photo and the weight through the form on this page for an honest indicative figure before you commit to anything.
Is “cash for gold” a rip-off?
Not always, but the mall and pawnshop model is built to be opaque. They quote one number, well under spot, and rely on you not knowing the maths. The gold itself is not worth less because you are selling it to them; they simply keep a wider, hidden margin, and they have to, because they send the gold away to be refined by someone else. Because Prodiam refines in-house, we carry less of that cost and can settle closer to the real spot. The difference on a few hundred grams is not small.
How much is my gold worth right now?
Its metal value is the fine-gold price on the day times the purity of your karat times the weight in grams, before the refining margin. A gram of 9 ct is 37.5% of the fine-gold price; a gram of 18 ct is 75%. Our gold price per gram page has a calculator you can run on today’s figure, and we will give you the firm number against the live LBMA spot once we have confirmed the karat and weight.
Do you buy broken or scrap gold?
Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, bent rings, clasps, gold from broken settings, dental gold and melted pieces are all bought on their metal content. Broken gold is worth exactly the same per gram as intact gold of the same karat, it all gets refined. If a broken piece still holds a natural diamond, we value that separately and pay on top.
Do I need FICA documents to sell gold?
Yes, and that is a good thing. We settle by verified bank transfer with full FICA / KYC paperwork, which protects you: the money is traceable and clean, with no later questions from your bank or SARS. Bring your ID and proof of banking. You must be the legal owner of the gold, or hold written authority to sell it on the owner’s behalf.
Can I sell gold I inherited, or a deceased estate’s gold?
Yes. We work with executors, deceased-estate attorneys and beneficiaries, with FICA-compliant settlement direct to the estate account and a photographic record of every piece valued. Whole estates, partial estates or a single inherited piece are all handled confidentially. See our sell jewellery page for how estate pieces with stones are valued.

Send a photo and the weight for an honest indicative figure, or bring the pieces to Bedfordview by appointment. No obligation, and nothing charged for the valuation.
