Sell gold to Prodiam · Bedfordview, Johannesburg
Sell your gold to the house that publishes its rate.
Sell gold in South Africa at a published rate: the live LBMA gold price, less 10%, worked out in front of you at our Bedfordview cutting house. If the piece holds a diamond, we value that too and pay for it on top.
The published rate · price updates daily from the live gold feed
This is what we pay. Work it out yourself.
The gold price, times your karat’s purity, times your weight, less our published 10%. Same rate for everyone, no haggling on the day. Weigh it on any kitchen scale to get your ballpark now.
Your estimate for today
R14 803
10 g × 75% × R2 193/g fine × 0.90
That is approximately what you would walk out with today for gold jewellery. The gold price moves every day; our published less-10% never does. Signed and designer pieces are valued case by case, usually above this floor: ask for a quote, no obligation.

No fee, no obligation, no pressure. Bring someone with you if you like, and if the number does not suit you, you take your gold home. Most people are done in under an hour.

- 3 We test and weigh it in front of you XRF analyser reads the karat, calibrated scale confirms the weight. Any stones are valued on top.

The no-downside part
Ask for the number. Worst case, you keep your gold.
An indicative valuation costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. We tell you what your gold is worth against the live spot, show you the karat and the margin, and if you would rather hold onto it or sell it elsewhere, that is entirely fine, you walk away knowing the honest number. We would genuinely rather you compared us than felt rushed. Bring any other written offer and we will price it like-for-like; if we cannot beat it, we will tell you so bluntly.
What we buy
If it is gold, in almost any form, we buy it.
Gold jewellery
Rings, chains, bracelets, earrings, pendants, signet rings. Worn, dated, odd single earrings, out of fashion, it makes no difference to the metal. 9 ct, 14 ct, 18 ct, 22 ct, 24 ct, yellow, white or rose.
Gold with diamonds in it
A gold ring holding a natural diamond is two assets. We price the metal against spot and the stone against the Rapaport sheet, and pay you on both, separately and transparently.
What we do not buy: raw or unwrought gold from the public. That is tightly controlled under South African law, and rightly so. We buy finished gold jewellery, valued on its metal content against the day’s spot, with any diamonds valued separately and paid on top.
The published rate
We pay the live gold price, less 10%. Published, not negotiated.
your payout = grams× karat purity× live fine-gold price× 0.90
| Karat | Purity | We pay per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 24 ct | 99.9% | R1 971,70 |
| 22 ct | 91.7% | R1 809,27 |
| 18 ct | 75.0% | R1 480,25 |
| 14 ct | 58.3% | R1 151,24 |
| 9 ct | 37.5% | R740,13 |
Worked at a reference fine-gold price of R2 192,97 per gram of pure 24 ct gold, checked 25 July 2026. The live figure loads on this page and refreshes daily from the market feed.
- Gold jewellery. The live gold price less 10%. That is the published floor, and it is the same for everyone.
- Signed, designer and finished pieces. A signed or wearable piece is usually worth more intact than it is as metal, so it is valued case by case on its own merits and generally beats the published floor. Ask for a quote; there is no obligation either way.
- Diamonds and gemstones set in the piece. Valued separately against the Rapaport sheet and paid on top of the metal. Most gold buyers hand your stones back or ignore them. We are a diamond house, so we can price them and buy them.
Check us before you arrive. Weigh the piece at home and run the number yourself. A kitchen scale gets you the ballpark, not the last decimal, so on the desk our XRF analyser confirms the karat and our calibrated scale confirms the weight, in front of you. You get the figure in writing before anything is agreed. We buy outright: this is a sale, not a loan.
It is safe to bring it in
Carrying gold to an unfamiliar address is the real hesitation, so here is the honest answer. The Paragon is a secured diamond-industry building: armed security, access control at entry, and secure underground parking, so you walk from your car to the desk without stepping onto the street. The South African offices of GIA and EGL operate under the same roof. Viewings are private and by appointment, one client at a time. See how visiting works.
Where your gold actually goes
It does not disappear into someone else’s melting pot. Your metal is reclaimed and comes back as new jewellery, made at our SADPMR-inspected workshop. Stones we buy are re-set into new pieces, not discarded. Reclaimed gold carries a fraction of the footprint of newly mined gold, so buying it back keeps metal that already exists in circulation instead of sitting in a drawer.

How selling works
From your drawer to cleared funds, five steps.
- 01
Work out your own number first
Weigh the piece at home. A kitchen scale is fine for a ballpark. Note the karat if it is stamped: 9 ct, 18 ct, 750, 375. Then run it through the payout calculator so you know roughly what we owe you before you ever speak to us. Nobody can move the goalposts on a number you already have.
- 02
Send a photo, or just come in
WhatsApp a photo and the weight and we reply with an indicative figure against the day’s gold price. Or book a slot and bring the pieces to Bedfordview. Free either way, no obligation, and nothing charged for the valuation.
- 03
We test the karat in front of you
On the desk your piece goes under an XRF analyser, which reads the actual gold content without cutting or damaging anything. No scratch test, no acid guess, no “trust me, it looks like 9 ct”. You watch the reading come up.
- 04
We weigh it, and we price the stones too
Onto the calibrated scale, in front of you. Then the arithmetic is done out loud: fine-gold price, times purity, times weight, less our published 10%. If the piece holds diamonds or gemstones, those are valued separately, diamonds against the Rapaport sheet, and paid on top of the metal. Most gold buyers hand your stones back or keep them quietly. We are a diamond house, so we buy them.
- 05
Firm figure in writing, then cleared funds
You get the number in writing before anything is agreed. Say no and you walk out with your gold, no pressure and no fee. Say yes and we settle by FICA-compliant bank transfer, typically cleared within 72 hours for South African sellers. Full paperwork, no envelope cash.
Where your gold goes
We do not mine gold. We re-mine drawers.
South Africa’s households hold a quiet reserve of gold nobody wears: snapped chains, single earrings, rings from another chapter of life. Buying that gold back is our whole model, because every gram we reclaim is a gram that never needs to be newly mined. Reclaimed gold carries a fraction of the footprint of freshly mined metal, and it keeps the value inside South Africa instead of under it. The full story of the loop is on the reclaimed gold page.
- You sell it. Priced at the published rate, in front of you.
- It is reclaimed. The metal goes back into circulation instead of sitting in a drawer.
- Our workshop remakes it. It comes back to the SADPMR-inspected bench and becomes the jewellery we sell.
- Your stones live on. Diamonds and gemstones we buy are re-cut or re-set into new pieces, never binned.
Selling gold in South Africa
Frequently asked questions.
How do I sell gold in South Africa for a fair price?
Sell it to a buyer who prices against the live gold spot and shows you the working, not one who quotes a single blind number. Prodiam is a Bedfordview diamond trading and cutting house: we read the karat with an XRF analyser and confirm the weight on our calibrated scale in front of you, value the metal against the day’s LBMA gold-spot rate in rand, and pay a published 10% under that figure with nothing hidden. And because we are a diamond house, a piece with a stone in it has the diamond valued too, against the Rapaport sheet, not just the gold. Send a photo and the weight through the form on this page for an honest indicative figure before you commit to anything.
Is “cash for gold” a rip-off?
Not always, but some buying models are built to be opaque. Some buyers quote one number, well under spot, and rely on you not knowing the maths, and if there is a diamond in the piece you may be paid for the gold alone while the stone rides along free. The gold itself is not worth less because you are selling it; what differs is whether a buyer prices it transparently against the live spot and shows you the working, or hands you one blind figure. Ask more than one buyer, bring us the number, and we will price it like-for-like and value any stones on top.
How much is my gold worth right now?
Its metal value is the fine-gold price on the day times the purity of your karat times the weight in grams. What we pay you is that figure less 10%, published, on gold jewellery; signed and designer pieces are quoted individually and beat it. A gram of 9 ct is 37.5% of the fine-gold price; a gram of 18 ct is 75%. Our gold price per gram page has a calculator you can run on today’s figure, and we will give you the firm number against the live LBMA spot once we have confirmed the karat and weight.
Do you buy worn or damaged gold jewellery?
Yes. Worn chains, single earrings, bent rings and dated pieces are all bought on their metal content. A worn piece is worth exactly the same per gram as a pristine one of the same karat; condition does not change the metal. If the piece still holds a natural diamond, we value that separately and pay on top.
Do I need FICA documents to sell gold?
Yes, and that is a good thing. We settle by verified bank transfer with full FICA / KYC paperwork, which protects you: the money is traceable and clean, with no later questions from your bank or SARS. Bring your ID and proof of banking. You must be the legal owner of the gold, or hold written authority to sell it on the owner’s behalf.
What happens to my gold after I sell it to Prodiam?
It becomes new jewellery. Your metal is reclaimed and worked into the pieces we make and sell at our SADPMR-inspected workshop. Diamonds and gemstones we buy are re-set into new designs, not discarded. Nothing usable is wasted.
Is selling my old gold an ethical thing to do?
It is arguably the most ethical gold decision you can make. Every gram of reclaimed gold that goes back into circulation is a gram that does not need to be newly mined, and reclaimed metal carries a fraction of the footprint of freshly mined gold. We are not a mining operation and never will be: our model is to buy back the gold South Africa already owns and remake it. Your unworn chain does more good in a new piece of jewellery than in a drawer.
Can I sell gold I inherited, or a deceased estate’s gold?
Yes. We work with executors, deceased-estate attorneys and beneficiaries, with FICA-compliant settlement direct to the estate account and a photographic record of every piece valued. Whole estates, partial estates or a single inherited piece are all handled confidentially. See our sell jewellery page for how estate pieces with stones are valued.
