The Like-for-Like Promise

Send any written quote for a GIA-certified natural diamond, with its report number. Within one business day the desk returns a firm like-for-like quote on the same specification, in ZAR, excluding VAT. And if your quote is the better deal, we will tell you to take it. That is the whole promise: a real number, fast, and an honest verdict either way. The desk trades on its name across decades, not on one stone.

The only comparison that counts is like-for-like

Two quotes can sit thousands of rand apart and both be honest, because they describe different stones. A half-grade of colour, a cut grade, a fluorescence line, or a different laboratory standard moves real money. The discipline is simple: identical specification, certificate numbers disclosed, stone and setting priced separately, VAT and delivery stated. Any quote that survives that discipline is worth comparing. Any quote that resists it has answered your question already.

The quote checklist, before you compare anything

  • Certificate report number, so the grades can be verified with the issuing laboratory before money moves.
  • Carat, colour, clarity, cut grade, the four numbers that carry most of the price.
  • Polish, symmetry and fluorescence, the three lines where cheap quotes quietly differ.
  • Natural or lab-grown, in writing, never assumed.
  • Stone price and setting price, separated, so you can compare the diamond itself.
  • VAT, delivery and insurance terms stated, firm figures, not estimates.

Hold both quotes to that list and the comparison usually decides itself. For the grading background, see GIA certification, explained and how GIA and EGL standards differ in South Africa.

Why the bench quotes sharp

Prodiam’s number comes from structure, not a special. The rough is bought at De Beers DBCM viewings and SA tender houses, cut and polished in-house at Procut DCW, and sold directly from the Bedfordview office. The importer, the wholesaler and the retail counter are not in the chain, so their margins are not in your price. That is the whole arithmetic, and it is why the trade itself buys this way. Read the dealer-direct explanation for the long version.

What happens when you send a spec

  1. 1

    Send the specification

WhatsApp or the form: the quote you hold, the spec, and the report number if disclosed. Photos help if the stone is already mounted.

  2. 2

    The desk verifies and quotes

The certificate is checked with its issuer, the specification is referenced against the Rapaport list, and a firm ZAR figure comes back, excluding VAT, like-for-like.

  3. 3

You compare with both certificates open

Side by side, same grades, verified numbers. If the other quote wins, take it with confidence. If the bench wins, viewing happens by appointment or video, and delivery is insured nationwide.

Quote comparison questions, answered

How do I compare two diamond quotes properly?

Only like-for-like comparisons mean anything. Both quotes must reference the same certified specification: carat, colour, clarity, cut grade, polish, symmetry and fluorescence, ideally on the same laboratory standard, with the report number disclosed so the certificate can be verified. A quote that will not state its report number, or that splits the stone and setting prices vaguely, cannot be compared and that is usually deliberate.

What does Prodiam need to counter-quote my existing quote?

The specification, at minimum: carat, colour, clarity and cut grade. The certificate report number makes it exact. Send it on WhatsApp or the contact form and the desk returns a firm ZAR figure, excluding VAT, for the same specification, referenced against the Rapaport wholesale list. You compare the two numbers with the certificates side by side.

Why would a cutting house quote sharper than a retail counter?

Structure, not generosity. A retail stone typically carries the margins of an importer, a wholesaler and the shop before it reaches the counter. Prodiam buys rough at De Beers DBCM viewings and SA tender houses, cuts it in-house at Procut DCW, and sells the polished stone directly. Fewer hands between the rough and your ring is the whole arithmetic.

Is a cheaper quote ever the wrong choice?

Yes, when it is cheaper because the specification quietly changed: a lower cut grade, strong fluorescence, a different laboratory standard, or a lab-grown stone where you asked for natural. Hold every quote to the same written specification and certificate standard first; only then does the lower number win. If a quote resists that discipline, treat the resistance as the answer.

Will Prodiam tell me if the other quote is actually good?

Yes, and it happens. If the quote you hold is sharp for the specification, the desk says so and you should take it. A bourse member trades on its name across decades, not on one stone; the comparison costs you nothing either way and you keep the verified certificate knowledge regardless of where you buy.

Can I compare quotes if I am outside Johannesburg?

Yes. The entire comparison happens over WhatsApp or email: specification in, firm ZAR quote back. If you proceed, viewing happens by appointment in Bedfordview or by video call, and the stone or finished piece travels insured nationwide via Brink’s or G4S with its certificate and a written insurance valuation.

Send the spec

One message starts it. The desk reads specifications the same day, and you will know within the conversation whether the number you hold is the right one.
