What makes a Prodiam engagement ring different

Most engagement rings in South Africa pass through several hands, a cutter, an importer, a wholesaler, then a retailer, before they reach a counter, and each hand adds a margin. Prodiam starts one step earlier and keeps the whole chain in one house. We are a South African diamond dealer and cutting house, directed by Darren Etkind, whose sister manufacturer D and D Diamonds CC has been a De Beers DBCM Emerging Beneficiation Customer since 2019. We buy rough, we cut and polish it in-house at Procut DCW to GIA Excellent cut grade, and only then do we set it into a ring. A high-street jeweller starts where we finish, buying in a polished stone or a finished ring and adding a retail margin on top. Starting at the rough is what lets us price direct rather than retail, and it is what puts your budget into the diamond and the make instead of the markup.

It is also a question of trust. Because we cut the stone, the centre diamond never leaves a documented chain, and it arrives with its own independent GIA report. GIA South Africa keeps an office in our Bedfordview building, so a stone can be re-verified on the spot before you settle, and you can check any GIA report number yourself against the GIA report-check service. The certificate travels with the diamond, not with our word for it. Prodiam works in natural, mined-Earth diamonds only; if you are weighing lab-grown against natural, we will lay out the trade-offs of each fairly before you decide, but the natural stone is what we cut.

Start here: the choices that build the ring

An engagement ring comes together from a handful of decisions, the shape and grades of the centre diamond, the setting style, the metal, and the size. Each link below opens its own in-depth page, where the choices, the stone grades and the process are set out in full. Begin with whichever question is on your mind; they all lead back to the same bench.

If you would rather begin with the stone than the setting, you can search our live diamond inventory and see fully-landed ZAR prices on real GIA-certified natural diamonds, then have us set the one you choose. Not sure where to start? Tell us what the ring is for and Darren will point you the right way within 24 hours.

How engagement rings are priced in South Africa

There is no single engagement-ring price, because the ring is built around a diamond and a diamond’s value is set by four grades, not one. Carat is only the multiplier; the cut, colour and clarity move the figure far more. The trade prices every polished stone against the Rapaport list, an international wholesale benchmark quoted in US dollars per carat for each colour-and-clarity combination at each size. A stone then trades at a discount to that list for its exact make, the rand-dollar rate of the day converts it, and 15% VAT is added. This is why an identical ring can cost more one month than the next: a weaker rand raises the local price of the same diamond.

Two more mechanics are worth knowing before you set a budget. First, the per-carat price is not flat; it steps up sharply at the popular weight thresholds, 0.50 ct, 0.70 ct, 0.90 ct, 1.00 ct, 1.50 ct and 2.00 ct, because rough large enough to yield those weights is scarcer and the round numbers are the most sought-after. A 0.90 ct stone looks almost identical on the hand to a one-carat and can be quietly excellent value just under the threshold, the same logic that makes a half-carat keenly priced just below 0.50 ct. Second, because we cut in-house, the importer-and-wholesaler markup is simply not in your price; you pay at a wholesale-direct, Rapaport-referenced level for the same GIA-certified specification. The only honest number is one quoted for your exact stone, so we show live ZAR prices on the diamond search and explain the one-carat figure in full, then quote your chosen ring firm in writing, excl. VAT, before any work begins.

How a ring is made to order

  1. 01

    Brief

Tell us the centre-stone shape and carat, the colour and clarity range, the setting style, the metal, the finger size, your budget and your deadline. We respond within 24 hours, in person, by video or on WhatsApp.

  2. 02

    Stone & quote

We cut or match the centre diamond at Procut DCW to GIA Excellent cut grade, supply its GIA report, and quote a firm ZAR figure, excl. VAT, against the stone, the metal and the make, before any work begins.

  3. 03

    Design & sign-off

The setting is drawn up, by CAD render where helpful, and adjusted until you are happy. Any matched side or halo stones are calibrated on the bench to sit true around the centre.

  4. 04

    Cast, set & finish

The ring is cast in 18k white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum, each diamond is set at the bench, and the piece is hand-polished to a mirror finish, then checked under loupe and microscope.

  5. 05

    Hand-over

Presentation at the Bedfordview studio by appointment, or insured overnight courier nationwide via Brink’s or G4S. GIA or EGL certification and a written insurance valuation are included.

Metals, sizing and the wedding band

Engagement rings are made in 18k white gold, yellow gold or rose gold, or in platinum. White gold and platinum solitaires are the most-requested setting in South Africa; both read cool and bright against a colourless or near-colourless stone, while yellow and rose gold suit a warmer, more vintage look and can flatter a faint tint in the diamond. Platinum is denser and naturally white the whole way through, where white gold is rhodium-plated and benefits from re-plating over the years. We make all of them to order and will talk you through which suits the stone, the wearer and the budget.

Two practical things finish the ring. Sizing comes first: use our ring size guide to find the right finger size before the ring is made, and if you are keeping the proposal a surprise we post a free sizing-ring set. The wedding band comes next: an engagement ring and its band are best designed together so they sit flush without a gap and share a metal lot, whether you commission them at once or come back for the band closer to the wedding. Resizing and aftercare are handled on the same bench through our resizing and repair service.

Buying an engagement ring remotely, anywhere in South Africa

You do not have to be in Johannesburg to commission a ring from the cutter. A large share of our engagement rings go to buyers in Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa, as well as to South Africans abroad, and the process is built to be done at a distance with the same confidence as in person. We cover how it works in the guide to buying diamonds online in South Africa: the brief and the stone-grade conversation happen by video and WhatsApp, you approve the diamond from its GIA report plus loupe photography and a live video viewing, and you approve the design before anything is cut. The finished ring is delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S, with certification and a written insurance valuation included. If you prefer, you are welcome to view loose stones and collect in person at the Bedfordview studio in Johannesburg by appointment.

Engagement rings in South Africa: common questions

How much does an engagement ring cost in South Africa?

There is no single price, because an engagement ring is built around a diamond, and the diamond’s four grades, carat, cut, colour and clarity, set most of the cost, with the metal and the making on top. The trade prices every stone against the Rapaport list, an international wholesale benchmark quoted in US dollars per carat, then trades at a discount to that list and converts it to rands at the day’s exchange rate, with 15% VAT added. A retail jeweller buys the stone in through an importer and a wholesaler and adds a counter margin; Prodiam buys the rough and cuts it in-house at Procut DCW, so you pay a wholesale-direct stone price plus honest manufacturing instead. You receive a firm ZAR quote, excl. VAT, before any work begins, and you can see live, fully-landed ZAR prices on real GIA-certified stones on our diamond search.

Where is the best place to buy an engagement ring in South Africa?

Buy where the diamond comes from rather than where it is merely sold. Prodiam is a Johannesburg diamond dealer and cutting house in Bedfordview, directed by Darren Etkind, that buys rough at De Beers DBCM viewings and SA tender houses, cuts it to GIA Excellent cut grade in-house at Procut DCW, and sets every engagement ring on its own bench, so there is no importer, wholesaler or retail counter markup in your price. GIA South Africa shares the building, so a stone can be re-verified on the spot before you settle. You are welcome at the Bedfordview studio by appointment, or you can do the whole thing remotely by video and WhatsApp, with the finished ring delivered insured and overnight anywhere in South Africa.

Where can I buy an engagement ring in Johannesburg?

Prodiam makes engagement rings in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, at Suite F1W6, 1 Kramer Road, by appointment, where GIA South Africa also keeps an office. Rather than a retail showroom, it is a working diamond dealer and cutting house: the centre stone is cut in-house at Procut DCW to GIA Excellent cut grade, then set on the bench, so a Johannesburg buyer pays a wholesale-direct price for the same GIA-certified stone a mall chain would mark up. You can view loose diamonds and discuss the design in person, and the finished ring is presented at the studio or delivered insured. Buyers from Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and the rest of South Africa are served the same way by video, with insured overnight delivery nationwide.

What is the difference between a Prodiam engagement ring and a chain-store one?

A chain-store engagement ring is mass-produced and priced at retail, with the diamond bought in through an importer and a wholesaler before it reaches the counter, and the make hidden inside one opaque ticket. A Prodiam ring is made to order around a single natural diamond that the same house bought as rough and cut in-house at Procut DCW to GIA Excellent cut grade, then set on its own Bedfordview bench, so the chain between the rough and your finger is short and your money goes into the stone and the make, not the markup. You see the diamond, the metal and the manufacturing priced separately, you choose the shape, setting and metal yourself, and the GIA or EGL certificate travels with the ring.

How long does it take to have an engagement ring made?

Most engagement rings run about three to five weeks from approved brief to finished ring: the brief and stone selection, design sign-off, casting in your chosen metal, setting at the bench, hand-polishing, then quality control under loupe and microscope. A faster turnaround is sometimes possible when the centre stone is already on the bench, so tell us your deadline, a proposal date or an anniversary, in the brief and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable rather than promise and miss it. Ring sizing and a written valuation for insurance are included with every piece.

Can I buy an engagement ring without proposing in person, from another city?

Yes, a large share of our engagement rings are commissioned remotely, from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa, as well as from South Africans abroad. The design conversation happens by video and WhatsApp, the centre stone is chosen from its GIA report plus loupe photography and a live video viewing, and we quote a firm rand figure before any work begins. The finished ring is delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S, with the GIA or EGL certificate and an insurance valuation included. If you are unsure of the size, we post a free sizing-ring set so the surprise stays a surprise.
