Diamonds, from the bench that cuts them.

A diamond is worth understanding before it is worth buying. Prodiam is a working cutting house and De Beers beneficiation customer in Bedfordview, Johannesburg: the rough comes through the De Beers viewing room, is cut on our own bench, and reaches you with a GIA or EGL certificate and a real price. No wholesaler, no mall markup, nothing in between. This is the short way in, whether you want to browse, learn, price, or sell.

The short version

Every diamond here is natural, mined and Kimberley-Process documented, and independently certified by GIA or EGL, one report per stone. Price follows the 4Cs, and of the four, cut is the one your eye actually reads across a room, so it is the one we protect first. Bought cutter-direct, a well-cut, eye-clean, near-colourless stone is a very different number to the same stone behind retail glass. Everything below routes you to the detail: the catalogue, the grading, the prices, and the buy-back desk.

Wherever you are in the decision.

Why buy here

A cutter and a De Beers customer, not a reseller.

Cutter-direct pricing

The rough is bought at the De Beers Johannesburg viewing room and cut on our bench. The margin a wholesaler and a retailer would each add is simply not there.

Certified, every stone

GIA or EGL report per diamond, checkable by number against the lab’s own database. We sit in the same building as GIA South Africa, so nothing goes ungraded.

Natural only, documented

Mined natural diamonds with Kimberley Process paperwork. No lab-grown, no synthetics, no ambiguity about what you are wearing or handing down.

Seen privately, dispatched insured

By appointment on a daylight tray in Bedfordview, or virtually if you are elsewhere, with insured delivery across South Africa and worldwide.

Diamonds in South Africa

Frequently asked questions.

Where can I buy diamonds in South Africa without the retail markup?

Buy from the cutting house, not the shop window. Prodiam is a working diamond cutter and De Beers beneficiation customer in Bedfordview, Johannesburg. Because the rough comes through the De Beers viewing room and is cut on our own bench, there is no wholesaler and no mall markup in the middle. You see each loose stone with its GIA or EGL certificate and a real price, and you can have it set into a ring in-house. Browse the loose-diamond catalogue, or tell us the exact spec and we will source it.

What does a diamond actually cost in South Africa?

Far less, bought correctly, than a mall chain would have you believe. Price is driven by the 4Cs: carat weight, cut, colour and clarity, with cut mattering most to how a stone looks. A well-cut, near-colourless, eye-clean one-carat round is a very different number wholesale-direct than the same stone behind a retail counter. Our diamond prices page breaks it down by carat, and every stone in the catalogue carries its own figure, VAT included, so there is nothing hidden.

Are the diamonds natural or lab-grown?

Every diamond Prodiam sells is a natural diamond, mined, cut and certified, with Kimberley Process documentation and a GIA or EGL report per stone. We do not stock lab-grown or synthetic diamonds. If you want to understand the difference before deciding, our reference desk covers natural versus lab-grown versus moissanite honestly, including where lab-grown makes sense and where it does not.

How do I know a diamond is real and graded correctly?

By the certificate and by independent verification. Every stone comes with a GIA or EGL report you can check against the lab’s own public database by report number. Prodiam sits in the same building as GIA South Africa, so uncertified stones can be graded on the spot. If you are buying elsewhere and want a second opinion, our guides walk you through verifying a diamond is real and reading a GIA report line by line.

Can I see the diamonds in person?

Yes. Prodiam works by appointment at the Bedfordview viewing room, Suite F1W6, 1 Kramer Road, so you see stones privately on a daylight tray rather than through glass. If you are not in Johannesburg, we run virtual viewings and dispatch insured, nationally and worldwide. Book a viewing or ask for a written quote and the desk will set it up.
