What an engagement ring costs, by centre stone
An engagement ring's total is the centre diamond plus the setting, metal and making. In our captured H-colour sample, a one-carat stone was about R61 300, a 1.5ct about R148 700 and a two carat about R300 500. These are diamond-only guide prices at VS1–VS2 clarity, with an Excellent cut filter and no fluorescence. We quote your complete ring before work begins.

Both columns show sampled guide prices, not an entry price or a complete ring. The count includes all grades in each weight band at capture. Set a budget for the whole ring, then choose the diamond and setting together.
No two diamonds are the same
A table describes a market, not a stone. Two diamonds identical on paper can differ by a third in price and both figures be right: how well the stone is actually cut and how much light it returns, where the inclusions sit and whether the eye finds them, how strongly it fluoresces, and how keenly that one happens to be priced against the international trade benchmark on the day. We check every stone against that benchmark before we show it to anybody, and the number that matters is the one quoted in writing on the stone you actually choose.

Captured 8 September 2026; guide figures rounded up to the next R100. Colour and clarity tables use sampled medians and percentile bands; rows without a measured range may use a limited lower-priced sample. Prices and availability can change. Your written quote identifies the actual stone and all inclusions.
Built for a working hand
The single biggest difference between a man’s engagement ring and a woman’s is how it is worn. A man is more likely to knock the ring against tools, a steering wheel, a keyboard or a gym bar every day, so the design has to put durability first. That usually means a lower profile, a more protected stone, and a heavier band than a delicate solitaire.
Get that right and the ring looks effortless and lasts; get it wrong and a raised stone snags and loosens within months.
Settings that suit a man
- Flush or gypsy set, the diamond sunk level with the band so nothing protrudes. The toughest option, and very clean.
- Bezel set, a rim of metal wrapped around the stone, protecting the edges while still letting it show.
- Low-profile solitaire, a single diamond kept close to the finger rather than raised on tall claws.
- Clean metal band, no stone at all, in a brushed, matte or hammered finish, for a man who wants the symbol without a diamond.
- Wider gauge, a heavier band, often 4 to 7 mm, that reads masculine and resists daily wear.
Metal: what lasts on his hand
Platinum is the most hard-wearing choice and holds a diamond securely, which is why it is the default for a man who is tough on jewellery. It is denser and heavier, with a cool white that does not fade. 18k white, yellow or rose gold are lighter on the hand and the budget; white gold is rhodium-finished for brightness, yellow and rose carry warmth and hide small marks well.
For hard daily wear we usually steer toward platinum or a heavier-gauge gold.

Plan for the wedding band now
If he will eventually wear an engagement ring and a wedding band together, design the first with the second in mind, same metal, a width that stacks cleanly, and a finish that pairs. Many couples commission the engagement ring and band as one considered set rather than matching them later. See diamond wedding bands and our bridal set design.

Men’s engagement rings: common questions
Do men wear engagement rings in South Africa?
Increasingly, yes. Men’s engagement rings, sometimes called management or engagement bands, have become a normal part of a proposal, especially where couples like the symmetry of both partners wearing a ring from the engagement onward. There is no single rule; some men want a diamond, some want a clean metal band that later sits beside a wedding ring. We make to whichever suits him.
What style of engagement ring suits a man?
Men generally suit lower, more protected settings than a raised solitaire. A flush or bezel-set diamond sits into the band so it survives daily wear; a low-profile solitaire keeps a single stone but tucks it down; and a wider band in a brushed or matte finish reads masculine without a stone at all. The hand and the work he does should guide how much the diamond stands proud.
What metal is best for a men’s engagement ring?
Platinum is the most hard-wearing and holds a diamond securely, which is why many men choose it; 18k white, yellow or rose gold are lighter on the budget and on the hand. For someone tough on jewellery, platinum or a heavier-gauge gold band resists daily knocks best. We will talk you through the trade-offs against how he lives and works.
Can his engagement ring match a wedding band later?
Yes, and it is worth planning for. If he intends to wear an engagement ring and a wedding band together, we design the first ring so the second sits cleanly beside it in the same metal and width. Many couples commission both as a considered pair. See our his and hers wedding rings.
Can you make a men’s engagement ring if we are not in Johannesburg?
Yes. Clients commission from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa. We size him accurately, agree the design by video and WhatsApp, and deliver the finished ring insured and overnight nationwide, with certification and a written valuation.
