Pendant styles: solitaire, halo, three-stone, cluster, cross and drop

The style sets how the diamond reads on the chain and how much light it gathers. We make every classic diamond pendant to order, so the design follows the stone and how it will be worn:

  • Solitaire pendant — a single diamond in a four-claw or bezel setting, the purest pendant and the one that shows the cut most honestly. A round brilliant faces up brightest; an oval, pear or emerald cut reads longer on the throat.
  • Halo pendant — a matched pavé frame of small diamonds around the centre stone, so a modest centre reads larger and catches more light. The halo is matched to the centre on our bench.
  • Three-stone pendant — a larger centre flanked by two matched stones, often carried over from a three-stone ring, with the side stones matched in colour and clarity to the centre.
  • Cluster pendant — several matched smaller diamonds set close as one bright form, a flower, a shield or a free design, all matched within one colour and one clarity grade.
  • Diamond cross pendant — a cross channel- or claw-set with a matched line of diamonds, made in any proportion from a fine everyday cross to a substantial statement piece.
  • Drop pendant — a centre or line of stones suspended to move with the wearer, from a single articulated drop to a more elaborate design, made to the brief.

Chains, bails and settings

A pendant is only as good as what holds it and what it hangs from, so we build the bail and supply the chain as part of the piece rather than leaving you to find one. The bail — the loop the chain runs through — is sized to the chain and hidden behind the pendant so the stone, not the fitting, is what the eye sees. We make the everyday chains in 18k white, yellow or rose gold or platinum, matched to the pendant metal:

  • Cable & belcher — round or oval links, the classic all-day chain, supple and strong, the most-requested pendant chain in South Africa.
  • Box & Venetian — square links that sit flat and sleek, a cleaner modern line that keeps the pendant facing forward.
  • Settings — four-claw for the most light into a solitaire, or a full bezel rub-over for the most secure, snag-free wear, which many clients prefer for daily and for children.

Every chain is finished with a secure bolt-ring or lobster clasp, and on a heavier pendant we fit a stronger bail and a wider link so the piece sits up rather than dragging. The chain length and link are your choice against the neckline you have in mind, and we will talk you through it in the brief.

Carat weights, stone grades and metals

A diamond pendant comes from the same made-to-order house as our custom engagement rings and the finished pieces in the ProJewel range, and it pairs naturally with a matched set of diamond earrings; if you would rather start from the stones, see the loose diamonds we currently have on the bench. When you are ready, brief us on the pendant and Darren will come back within 24 hours.

Diamond pendants: common questions

How much does a diamond pendant cost in South Africa?

There is no single figure, because a diamond pendant is priced on the stone it carries — the carat weight, and the colour, clarity and cut grade you choose set most of the cost, then the metal and the chain. Because the diamond is cut in-house at Procut DCW rather than bought in and marked up, you pay a wholesale-direct stone price plus transparent manufacturing, not a retail premium. We quote a firm ZAR figure on application, excl. VAT, before any work begins.

What chain length comes with the pendant?

You choose the chain to suit the wearer and the neckline. We make most pendant necklaces on a 40cm to 45cm chain, with 45cm the everyday standard and 40cm sitting higher at the collarbone; a 50cm chain drops the pendant lower over a top. The chain is matched to the pendant metal — 18k white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum — in a cable, belcher or box link, with a secure clasp. We size the chain on the brief.

Are the diamonds GIA certified?

Yes. Prodiam works in natural diamonds only, and the stones are GIA or EGL certified; a larger centre stone is supplied with its own GIA report, and round brilliants are polished to GIA Excellent cut grade on our own bench. You receive the certification with the finished pendant, along with a written valuation for insurance. You can verify a GIA report number yourself against the GIA report-check service before you settle.

Can you make a custom or cross pendant?

Yes — every Prodiam diamond pendant is made to order in Bedfordview, so a custom design or a diamond cross is simply a different brief. We build solitaire, halo, three-stone, cluster, cross and drop pendants, and we work from your sketch, an heirloom you want reset, or a reference photograph. The accent stones in a cross or cluster are matched in-house within one colour and one clarity grade so the pendant reads evenly, then set at the bench.

Can I order a diamond pendant from outside Johannesburg?

Yes — clients commission diamond pendants from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa. The brief and stone-grade conversation happens by video or WhatsApp, you approve the diamond, the setting, the metal and the chain length, and the finished pendant is delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S. Certification and a written insurance valuation are included with every piece.

How long does a custom diamond pendant take to make?

Most diamond pendants run three to five weeks from approved brief to finished piece: selecting or matching the stones, building and casting the pendant in your chosen metal, setting the diamonds at the bench, fitting the bail and a matched chain, hand-polishing, and quality control under loupe and microscope. A cluster, cross or articulated drop that carries more stones can take a little longer. Tell us your deadline in the brief and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
