Diamond Rings · Bedfordview, Johannesburg
Diamond rings in South Africa, cut and made by a Bedfordview cutting house.
A diamond ring is mostly its diamond, and the diamond is where most of the value, and most of the markup, sits. Prodiam is the unusual case where one Johannesburg house does the lot: we buy the rough at De Beers DBCM viewings and South African tender houses, cut and polish it in-house to GIA Excellent cut grade, and set it on our own Bedfordview bench, then sell direct. Engagement rings, eternity rings, wedding bands and men’s diamond rings, all GIA-certified natural diamonds, all made to order, with insured delivery anywhere in South Africa.

What makes a Prodiam diamond ring different
Most diamond rings in South Africa pass through several hands, a cutter, an importer, a wholesaler, then a retailer, before they reach a counter, and each hand adds a margin. Prodiam starts one step earlier and keeps the whole chain in one house. We are a South African diamond dealer and cutting house, directed by Darren Etkind, whose sister manufacturer D and D Diamonds CC, trading as Procut DCW, has been a De Beers DBCM Emerging Beneficiation Customer since 2019. We buy rough, we cut and polish it in-house to GIA Excellent cut grade, and only then do we set it into a ring. A high-street jeweller starts where we finish, buying in a polished stone or a finished ring and adding a retail margin on top. Starting at the rough is what lets us price direct rather than retail, and it is what puts your money into the diamond and the make instead of the markup.
It is also a question of trust. Because we cut the stone, the diamond in your ring never leaves a documented chain, and it arrives with its own independent GIA report. GIA South Africa keeps an office in our Bedfordview building, so a stone can be re-verified on the spot before you settle, and you can check any GIA report number yourself against the GIA report-check service. The certificate travels with the diamond, not with our word for it. Prodiam works in natural, mined-Earth diamonds only; if you are weighing a real diamond against a lab-grown stone or a simulant such as cubic zirconia, we will lay out the trade-offs of each fairly before you decide, but the natural diamond is what we cut.
Every diamond ring we make, in one place
This page is the umbrella over every diamond ring Prodiam makes, broader than the engagement-ring guide, which it sits above. Whether you are after a proposal ring, an anniversary band, a diamond wedding ring or a men’s piece, each link below opens its own in-depth page, where the choices, the stone grades and the process are set out in full. Begin with whichever ring is on your mind; they all lead back to the same bench.
- Diamond engagement rings The pillar, the full guide to the proposal ring: shapes, settings, metals and how the price is built, every ring made to order around a hero diamond.
- Diamond eternity rings Full and half eternity rings, calibrated stones matched the whole way round the band, as an anniversary piece or a wedding ring in its own right.
- Diamond wedding bands Diamond-set wedding bands for her and for him, accent stones matched on the bench to sit flush against the engagement ring.
- Rings by diamond shape Round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, princess, marquise and radiant, weighed for sparkle, perceived size and finger flattery, each cut to order.
- Solitaire diamond rings A single diamond on a clean band, the most classic style, where the cut grade does all the work and nothing distracts from the stone.
- Halo diamond rings A ring of pavé diamonds framing the centre stone to add sparkle and presence, every accent stone calibrated and set on our own bench.
- White-gold diamond rings The most-requested metal in South Africa, cool and bright against a colourless stone, made to order in 18k white gold and explained against platinum.
- Men’s diamond rings Diamond-set bands, signets and dress rings in gold, platinum or palladium, built heavier for daily wear and made to order on the bench, never fashion bands.
- The 1 carat diamond ring The price mechanism for the most-requested size, why a one-carat stone’s grades, not its weight, set the figure.
- The 2 carat diamond ring Why a two-carat stone steps up sharply on the per-carat curve, and how to read the price for a larger statement ring.
- A fully custom diamond ring The concierge bespoke route, from brief and CAD render to the finished ring, for a one-off design or a reset heirloom stone.
- Start with the loose diamond Search live, GIA-certified natural stones with fully-landed ZAR prices, then have us set the one you choose into any ring above.
If you would rather begin with the stone than the setting, you can search our live diamond inventory and see fully-landed ZAR prices on real GIA-certified natural diamonds, then have us set the one you choose into any of the rings above. Not sure where to start? Tell us what the ring is for and Darren will point you the right way within 24 hours.
Diamond rings for women, by style and by occasion
Most diamond rings made for women fall into a few families, and the right one depends on the occasion and the look rather than a fixed catalogue. The engagement ring is the hero piece, a single solitaire or a halo built around one bright centre stone. The eternity ring carries diamonds the whole way, or half way, around the band, and is given as an anniversary or milestone piece as often as it is worn as a wedding ring. The diamond wedding band is designed to sit flush against the engagement ring and share its metal lot. Beyond these, dress and cocktail rings let a larger or fancy-shaped stone take centre stage on the right hand. We cut the centre and accent stones ourselves, so we can match a pair of side stones or a run of pavé within one colour and one clarity grade, which is the thing a shop buying stones in rarely manages.
Men’s diamond rings, done properly
A men’s diamond ring should look and wear like a serious piece of jewellery, not a fashion band, and that is the only way Prodiam makes them. We build diamond-set wedding bands, signet rings and dress rings in 18k gold, platinum or palladium, with any diamonds GIA or EGL certified and matched on our own bench, set flush, in a channel or bezel so the stones are protected through daily wear. Men’s rings tend to be wider and heavier than women’s, so the metal weight and the setting are engineered for the hand and the work it does, rather than thinned out to hit a low ticket. A signet can be cut with a single bezel-set diamond or left as a polished or engraved face; a band can run from a single flush stone to a row of channel-set diamonds. For a plain or diamond-accented platinum wedding ring, our men’s platinum wedding rings page covers the metal and the make in full, and the same bench builds the diamond versions to order.
How diamond rings are priced in South Africa
There is no single diamond-ring price, because the ring is built around a diamond and a diamond’s value is set by four grades, not one. Carat is only the multiplier; the cut, colour and clarity move the figure far more. The trade prices every polished stone against the Rapaport list, an international wholesale benchmark quoted in US dollars per carat for each colour-and-clarity combination at each size. A stone then trades at a discount to that list for its exact make, the rand-dollar rate of the day converts it, and 15% VAT is added. This is why an identical ring can cost more one month than the next: a weaker rand raises the local price of the same diamond.
Two more mechanics are worth knowing before you set a budget. First, the per-carat price is not flat; it steps up sharply at the popular weight thresholds, 0.50 ct, 0.70 ct, 0.90 ct, 1.00 ct, 1.50 ct, 2.00 ct and 3.00 ct, because rough large enough to yield those weights is scarcer and the round numbers are the most sought-after. A 0.90 ct stone looks almost identical on the hand to a one-carat and can be quietly excellent value just under the threshold; the same logic applies as you move up to a two-carat and beyond. Second, because we cut in-house, the importer-and-wholesaler markup is simply not in your price; you pay at a wholesale-direct, Rapaport-referenced level for the same GIA-certified specification. The only honest number is one quoted for your exact stone, so we show live ZAR prices on the diamond search and quote your chosen ring firm in writing, excl. VAT, before any work begins.

Metals, sizing and certification
Diamond rings are made in 18k white gold, yellow gold or rose gold, in platinum, or in palladium for a lighter white metal. White gold and platinum are the most-requested in South Africa; both read cool and bright against a colourless or near-colourless stone, while yellow and rose gold suit a warmer, more vintage look and can flatter a faint tint in the diamond. Platinum is denser and naturally white the whole way through, where white gold is rhodium-plated and benefits from re-plating over the years. We make all of them to order and will talk you through which suits the stone, the wearer and the budget. Sizing comes first: use our ring size guide to find the right finger size before the ring is made, and if a proposal is a surprise we post a free sizing-ring set. Every ring is set with natural, GIA-certified diamonds, and the certificate, along with a written valuation for insurance, is handed over with the finished piece.
Buying a diamond ring remotely, anywhere in South Africa
You do not have to be in Johannesburg to commission a ring from the cutter. A large share of our diamond rings go to buyers in Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa, as well as to South Africans abroad, and the process is built to be done at a distance with the same confidence as in person. The brief and the stone-grade conversation happen by video and WhatsApp, you approve the diamond from its GIA report plus loupe photography and a live video viewing, and you approve the design before anything is cut. The finished ring is delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S, with certification and a written insurance valuation included. If you prefer, you are welcome to view loose stones and collect in person at the Bedfordview studio in Johannesburg by appointment.
Diamond rings in South Africa: common questions
How much does a diamond ring cost in South Africa?
There is no single price, because a diamond ring is built around its diamond, and the diamond’s four grades, carat, cut, colour and clarity, set most of the cost, with the metal and the making on top. The trade prices every polished stone against the Rapaport list, an international wholesale benchmark quoted in US dollars per carat for each colour-and-clarity combination at each size, then trades at a discount to that list, converts it to rands at the day’s exchange rate, and adds 15% VAT. A retail jeweller buys the stone in through an importer and a wholesaler and adds a counter margin; Prodiam buys the rough and cuts it in-house, so you pay a wholesale-direct stone price plus honest manufacturing instead. You receive a firm ZAR quote, excl. VAT, before any work begins, and you can see live, fully-landed ZAR prices on real GIA-certified stones on our diamond search.
What is the difference between a diamond ring and an engagement ring?
An engagement ring is one kind of diamond ring, the one given at a proposal, usually a single hero diamond on a band. The term diamond ring is broader: it also covers diamond eternity rings, diamond-set wedding bands, anniversary and dress rings, and men’s diamond and signet rings. At Prodiam every one of them is made to order on the same Bedfordview bench, around natural diamonds the same house cut in-house to GIA Excellent cut grade, so the difference is the occasion and the design, not the source of the stone or the way it is priced. If you are specifically choosing a ring for a proposal, the engagement-ring pillar covers shapes, settings and budgets in full; if you want any other diamond ring, this hub routes you to the right page.
How do I know a diamond ring has a real diamond, not a simulant?
A real diamond ring carries an independent grading certificate that names the stone as a natural diamond and records its exact carat, cut, colour and clarity, and on a Prodiam ring that is a GIA or EGL report whose number you can verify yourself against the laboratory’s online report-check service before you settle. A simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite is a different material with different optical and physical properties and is never sold or represented as a diamond here. Prodiam works in natural, mined-Earth diamonds only, cut in-house, and GIA South Africa keeps an office in our Bedfordview building, so a stone can be re-verified on the spot. The certificate travels with the ring, not with our word for it.
Do you make men’s diamond rings?
Yes, and done the premium way rather than as cheap fashion bands. A Prodiam men’s diamond ring is a diamond-set wedding band, signet or dress ring built in 18k gold, platinum or palladium, with any diamonds GIA or EGL certified and matched on our own bench, not glued-in chips on a plated base. Men’s rings tend to be wider and heavier than women’s, so the metal weight and the diamond setting are engineered for daily wear, with flush, channel or bezel settings that protect the stones at work and on the hand. We design each one to order around your size, metal and the look you want, and quote it firm before any work begins.
What carat diamond ring should I choose, 1, 2 or 3 carat?
Choose the carat by how the finished ring looks on the hand and where it sits on the price curve, not by the number alone, because cut, colour and clarity move both the look and the cost as much as weight does. A well-cut one-carat round faces up bright and is the most-requested size in South Africa; a two-carat stone reads noticeably larger and steps up sharply in per-carat price because rough that yields it is scarcer; a three-carat is a statement stone priced well above twice the two-carat rate. The per-carat price is not flat, it jumps at the popular thresholds, so a stone a touch under a round number can be quietly excellent value. We set out the mechanism on the one-carat and two-carat price pages and quote your exact stone live in rands.
Can I buy a diamond ring without coming to Johannesburg?
Yes, a large share of our diamond rings are commissioned remotely, from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa, as well as from South Africans abroad. The brief and the stone-grade conversation happen by video and WhatsApp, you approve the diamond from its GIA report plus loupe photography and a live video viewing, and we quote a firm rand figure before any work begins. The finished ring is delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S, with the GIA or EGL certificate and an insurance valuation included. If the ring is a surprise and you are unsure of the size, we post a free sizing-ring set, and you are equally welcome to view loose stones and collect in person at the Bedfordview studio by appointment.
