Vintage is in the detailing, not the age

What makes a ring read vintage is craftsmanship you can see up close. Milgrain, the fine row of beads worked along an edge; filigree, the pierced metal lacework beneath the setting; hand-engraving across the shoulders; lower, more ornate galleries; and halos or three-stone arrangements that frame the centre. Each era has its own signature, so the first thing we settle is which one moves you.

Eras, and what they look like

  • Art Deco, geometric and symmetrical, with bold lines, step-cut stones and crisp milgrain. Confident and architectural.
  • Edwardian, delicate and lace-like, with fine filigree and a light, almost airy platinum setting.
  • Victorian and antique, warmer and more romantic, often in yellow gold, with hand-engraving and old-cut character.
  • Vintage halo, a period-style halo and milgrain wrapped around a modern brilliant, the most popular blend of old look and new sparkle.

Setting an heirloom diamond

A vintage commission is the natural home for a family stone. We can take the diamond from a grandmother-s or mother-s ring and reset it into a new vintage-style setting, keeping the stone and the story while giving it a secure, wearable mount. If it is an antique cut, with its softer, more characterful flashes, we design around that character rather than trying to make it look modern. This is our heirloom redesign service, and it is one of the most personal things we make.

Vintage engagement rings: common questions

What makes an engagement ring look vintage?

Vintage style is in the detailing, not the age. Milgrain, the fine beaded edge along the metal; filigree, the pierced lacework under the setting; hand-engraving on the band; halos and three-stone arrangements; and lower, more intricate galleries all read as vintage. Different eras have their signatures, Art Deco is geometric and symmetrical, Edwardian is delicate and lace-like, so we work from the era you love rather than a vague idea of old.

Are your vintage rings antique, or new?

New, made to order in vintage style, which is what most buyers actually want: the look and romance of a period ring with the durability, certification and correct sizing of a new one. A genuine antique often has worn metal, an uncertified old-cut stone and a size that is hard to alter. We build the vintage character into a sound new ring, around a certified diamond.

Can you use my grandmothers diamond in a vintage-style ring?

Yes, and it is one of the most meaningful things we do. We can reset an heirloom diamond into a new vintage-style setting, keeping the stone and the story while giving it a secure, wearable mount. If the old stone is an antique cut, we design around its character rather than against it. This is our heirloom redesign service.

Which metal suits a vintage engagement ring?

Platinum suits the fine, lace-like Edwardian and Art Deco looks because it holds crisp detail and milgrain beautifully; yellow gold suits a warmer, more Victorian or antique feel. White metals keep a near-colourless diamond looking white, warmer metals can flatter a stone with a little colour. We will match the metal to the era and to your stone.

Can you make a vintage-style ring if we are not in Johannesburg?

Yes. Clients commission from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa. We agree the era, detailing and stone by video and WhatsApp, and deliver the finished ring insured and overnight nationwide, with certification and a written valuation.
