Buying from a diamond dealer, not a retailer

A diamond on a retail shelf has usually paid its way past several hands before it reaches you, the cutter, an importer, a wholesaler and then the shop, each adding a margin. A dealer who also cuts removes those layers: you buy the stone from the people who polished it. That is the structural reason a diamond from a working cutting house costs less than the same grade across a retail counter, and it is why the SA trade buys the way it does.

We price loose stones against the Rapaport wholesale list, the reference the diamond trade itself uses, so you are not comparing a retail markup to a discount, you are buying at the level the trade buys. Every stone is quoted as a firm ZAR figure, excluding VAT, before any commitment, and it comes with its laboratory report so you can see exactly what you are paying for. If you want the arithmetic in full, the briefing on wholesale vs retail diamond pricing sets it out.

A DDCSA bourse member and a working cutting house

Prodiam Trading is a member of the Diamond Dealers Club of South Africa, the national diamond bourse, and operates under SADPMR licensing, the State Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator that governs the trade. The sister manufacturer, D and D Diamonds CC, has been a De Beers DBCM Emerging Beneficiation Customer since 2019, which is how rough reaches our own bench rather than being bought in already polished.

From there the chain stays under one roof. Procut DCW buys the rough at De Beers DBCM viewings in Johannesburg, from South African tender houses, the State Diamond Trader and the Kimberley, Wolmaransstad and Schweizer-Reneke houses, and from independent SA diggers worked with for decades. The rough is cut and polished in-house to GIA Excellent cut grade, and Prodiam Trading then markets, sells and finances the polished output. One operation, one Bedfordview address, directed by Darren Etkind. We call it single-custody beneficiation; in plain terms, we cut them and you pay wholesale.

Most clients meet the stones at the Bedfordview office by appointment, on the daylight tray, under loupe. Buying from a diamond dealer: common questions

Is Prodiam a registered diamond dealer in South Africa?

Yes. Prodiam Trading is a member of the Diamond Dealers Club of South Africa (the DDCSA bourse) and operates under SADPMR licensing, the State Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator that governs the SA diamond trade. The sister manufacturer, D and D Diamonds CC, has been a De Beers DBCM Emerging Beneficiation Customer since 2019, which is how rough reaches our own cutting bench at Procut DCW. The business is directed by Darren Etkind from one Bedfordview address.

Can I buy diamonds wholesale, direct from the dealer?

Yes, that is the whole point of buying from a dealer who also cuts. Because we buy the rough, cut and polish it ourselves, and sell the polished output directly, you pay a wholesale-direct stone price plus transparent manufacturing, not a retail counter price that has passed through an importer, a wholesaler and a shop. Loose stones are referenced against the Rapaport wholesale list. We quote a firm ZAR figure, excluding VAT, before any work or commitment.

Do I need a trade account to buy from Prodiam?

No. Private clients are welcome and most of our buyers are individuals choosing an engagement stone or a piece of fine jewellery. If you are a jeweller, designer or in the trade and want to buy on account, we run trade accounts separately, see the trade page. Either way the stones are the same goods cut on the same bench; the difference is only how the relationship is set up.

What does buying direct from a cutting house actually save me?

A retail diamond typically carries the margins of several middlemen between the cutter and the counter, an importer, a wholesaler and the retailer each take a turn. A cutter-direct dealer removes those layers: you buy from the people who polished the stone. The saving varies by stone, but it is the structural reason a diamond from a working cutting house costs less than the equivalent grade across a retail counter. We show you the grade on its GIA report so you are comparing like with like.

Can I buy from Prodiam if I am not in Johannesburg?

Yes. Clients buy loose diamonds and commission pieces from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa. Viewing and the grade conversation happen at the Bedfordview office by appointment or by video and WhatsApp; the stone or finished piece is then delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S, with its certification and a written insurance valuation.
