Diamond Stud & Drop Earrings · Bedfordview, Johannesburg
Diamond stud earrings, matched into a perfect pair on our own bench.
A pair of diamond stud earrings lives or dies on the match between the two stones, and matching is what a cutting house does that a retailer cannot. Every Prodiam pair of diamond earrings — studs, halo studs and drop earrings — is made to order in our Bedfordview, Johannesburg workshop, with the centre stones cut at Procut DCW and matched in-house within one colour and one clarity grade so the eye reads them as identical across both ears. GIA-certified natural diamonds, set in white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or platinum, priced on application, with insured delivery anywhere in South Africa.

Perfect-pair diamond studs, matched in-house
With studs the eye sees both stones at once, one on each ear, so any difference between them shows immediately — a shade of colour, a touch of cloudiness, a slightly different outline. Because we cut and grade the diamonds ourselves at Procut DCW, we match the pair within one colour grade and one clarity grade, and to the same carat weight, shape and cut, then sit them side by side on the daylight tray under loupe before they are set. Two stones bought separately, or bought in by a retailer, almost never match this closely. The perfect pair is the whole point of buying diamond studs from the people who cut them.
Studs, halo studs and drop earrings
Every pair is made to order, so the design follows how the earrings will be worn:
- Four-claw studs — each diamond held in a four-claw basket, the most light into the stone and the brightest, most classic diamond stud. The face-up size reads slightly larger.
- Three-claw (martini) & bezel studs — the stone sits lower and more securely, in a three-claw martini cup or a full bezel rub-over. The most secure and snag-free, which many clients prefer for everyday wear and for children.
- Halo studs — a matched pavé frame of small diamonds around each centre stone, so a modest pair of centres reads larger and catches more light. The halo is matched to the centre on our bench.
- Diamond drop earrings — a matched centre or line of stones suspended to move with the wearer, from a single drop to a more elaborate articulated design, made to the brief.
Studs are fitted with secure threaded or push posts and butterfly or screw backs; for heavier centres we fit a larger back or an alpha-style disc so the earring sits up rather than drooping. The setting and the backs are your choice against how the pair will be worn, and we will talk you through the trade-offs in the brief.
Carat weights, stone grades and metals
| Choice | What we make to order |
|---|---|
| Everyday studs | ~0.25ct–0.50ct per stone (~0.5ct–1ct total pair), a discreet, all-day pair |
| Classic studs | ~0.50ct–1.00ct per stone (~1ct–2ct total pair), the most-requested diamond stud weight in South Africa |
| Statement studs | 1.00ct+ per stone, matched perfect pair, quoted on the brief |
| Halo & drop earrings | Matched centre stones with a matched pavé halo or articulated drop, total weight to the design |
| Metals | 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum |
| Certification | GIA / EGL certified; larger centre stones supplied with their own report |
You set the carat weight against your budget and the look you want; round brilliants are polished to GIA Excellent cut grade on our own bench. Pricing is on application — the two stones drive the figure, and you receive a firm ZAR quote, excl. VAT, before any work begins.

Diamond earrings: common questions
How much do diamond stud earrings cost in South Africa?
There is no fixed price, because a pair of diamond studs is priced on the two stones it carries — their combined carat weight and the colour, clarity and cut grade you choose set most of the cost, then the metal and setting. Because the diamonds are cut and matched in-house at Procut DCW rather than bought in and marked up, you pay a wholesale-direct stone price plus transparent manufacturing, not a retail premium. We quote a firm ZAR figure on application, excl. VAT, before any work begins.
What is a perfect-pair diamond stud, and can you match the two stones?
A perfect pair is two diamonds matched so closely that the eye reads them as identical across both ears. Because we cut and grade the stones ourselves, we match the pair within one colour grade and one clarity grade, and to the same carat weight, shape and cut, then check them side by side on the daylight tray under loupe. Two stones bought separately almost never match this well; matching the pair is precisely what a cutting house can do that a retailer cannot.
Are the diamond studs GIA certified?
Yes. Prodiam works in natural diamonds only, and the stones are GIA or EGL certified; larger centre stones are supplied with their own GIA report, and round brilliants are polished to GIA Excellent cut grade on our own bench. You receive the certification with the finished earrings, along with a written valuation for insurance. You can verify a GIA report number yourself against the GIA report-check service before you settle.
What settings do you make — and which is best for studs?
We make four-claw and three-claw (martini) studs, bezel-set studs, halo studs with a pavé frame around the centre stone, and diamond drop earrings, all to order. Four-claw studs let the most light into the stone for the brightest look; martini and bezel settings sit lower and more securely, which many clients prefer for everyday wear and for children. The setting is your choice against how the earrings will be worn; we will talk you through the trade-offs in the brief.
How long do custom diamond earrings take to make?
Most diamond studs and drop earrings run three to five weeks from approved brief to finished pair: matching the centre stones, building and casting the settings in your chosen metal, setting each stone at the bench, fitting secure posts and backs, hand-polishing, and quality control under loupe and microscope. Halo and drop designs that carry side stones can take a little longer. Tell us your deadline in the brief and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
Can I order diamond earrings if I am not in Johannesburg?
Yes — clients commission diamond studs and drop earrings from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha and across South Africa. The brief and stone-grade conversation happens by video or WhatsApp, you approve the matched pair, the setting and the metal, and the finished earrings are delivered insured and overnight nationwide via Brink’s or G4S. Certification and a written insurance valuation are included with every pair.
