How a sourcing brief works
- 01
Brief
Phone, email, WhatsApp, or in-person at the viewing room. Tell us shape, carat range, colour range, clarity range, budget, and any deadline. The more specific the brief, the faster the answer.
- 02
Match against current rough and polished
We check what is on the Procut DCW bench, what is on the Prodiam Trading polished shelf, and what is coming up at the next De Beers DBCM viewing. If a match exists you have a quote within 48 hours.
- 03
If no match, we go to market
We approach the State Diamond Trader, SA tender houses, and independent-digger contacts. For finer goods we also reach into the DDCSA and WFDB networks. Most briefs return at least one option within 5 to 10 working days.
- 04
Inspection and certification
You see the stone under loupe and microscope at the viewing room, or by high-resolution video and lab certificate remotely. GIA report supplied; EGL on request. The same building houses GIA South Africa for any re-grading.
- 05
Settle and deliver
EFT, Yoco card, PayFast, or SWIFT wire. Insured overnight delivery within South Africa via Brink’s or G4S; jewellery-grade insured international dispatch via Ferrari Group or FedEx Custom Critical with full customs paperwork.
Why you buy diamonds direct, and bench-priced, through Prodiam
Most SA buyers transact through layers: importer, wholesaler, retailer, mark-up, mark-up, mark-up. Prodiam is the manufacturer. Procut DCW is the bench. There are no layers between the De Beers viewing room and the price you pay. That is a logistical fact, not a marketing line. See how the EBC structure makes this possible.
What we will not source
- Lab-grown / synthetic diamonds. We are a natural-diamond house.
- Moissanite, cubic zirconia, or any simulant.
- Stones without lab certification of established provenance.
- Anything outside Kimberley Process compliance.
Where to buy diamonds in South Africa, answered
Where can I buy diamonds in South Africa, away from the retail chains?
The shortest route to buy diamonds in South Africa is direct from a cutting house rather than a high-street chain. Prodiam, in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, sources to a written brief from De Beers DBCM viewings, the State Diamond Trader and SA tender houses, then supplies the polished stone at bench prices. You give us shape, carat, colour, clarity and budget; we find the stone. No showroom markup sits between the rough and you.
Can I buy a diamond directly from the cutter in South Africa?
Yes. Prodiam is the retail face of Procut DCW, a working diamond manufacturer, so when you buy from us you buy diamonds direct from the cutter, not from a reseller. Rough is bought at De Beers DBCM viewings and SA tender houses, cut in-house in Bedfordview, then sold to you at a manufacturer-direct price. Cutter-direct buying is the single biggest reason the per-carat price is lower than chain retail.
How do I buy loose diamonds in Johannesburg?
Brief Prodiam in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, by phone, email, WhatsApp or in person at the viewing room. Tell us shape, carat range, colour range, clarity range and budget. We match against current Procut DCW bench stock and the next De Beers DBCM viewing, then supply a GIA-certified loose diamond at a wholesale-direct price. You inspect under loupe and microscope, or by video and certificate if buying remotely.
Is it cheaper to source a diamond direct rather than buy retail?
Usually, yes. Most South African buyers transact through layers, importer, wholesaler, retailer, each adding a margin. Sourcing a diamond direct from Prodiam removes those layers because we are the manufacturer: Procut DCW cuts the stone and we sell it to you. On a comparable GIA-Excellent stone the bench-direct price is typically well below high-street chain retail. Prices are quoted on application, per stone, against your brief.
What can Prodiam source, and how long does it take?
Any shape, cut, colour and clarity from 0.30 ct to 10 ct and above, plus matched pairs, calibrated parcels and certified fancy colours. If a match is on the bench or the polished shelf you have a quote within 48 hours. If we go to market, to the State Diamond Trader, SA tender houses or our digger network, most briefs return at least one option within 5 to 10 working days.
Do you only source natural diamonds?
Yes. Prodiam is a natural-diamond house. We will not source lab-grown or synthetic diamonds, moissanite, cubic zirconia or any simulant, and we will not source stones without lab certification or established Kimberley Process provenance. Every diamond we source is a certified natural stone, GIA or EGL graded, with its source recorded. That single rule is non-negotiable.
