We are a cutting house in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, not a shop in Johannesburg, and that is the point: you are buying at the level the trade buys at rather than from a retail counter. Everything ships insured overnight, and you can see the full grading report and video before you pay a cent.

No two diamonds are the same

A table describes a market, not a stone. Two diamonds identical on paper can differ by a third in price and both figures be right: how well the stone is actually cut and how much light it returns, where the inclusions sit and whether the eye finds them, how strongly it fluoresces, and how keenly that one happens to be priced against the international trade benchmark on the day. We check every stone against that benchmark before we show it to anybody, and the number that matters is the one quoted in writing on the stone you actually choose.

Where Johannesburg actually buys engagement rings, honestly compared

Where you buyWhat sits in the price
Mall jeweller (Sandton, Rosebank, your local centre)A stone bought in from a wholesaler, plus counter margin, showroom rent and stock-holding cost. Convenient, and you pay for the convenience on the identical certified grades.
Online-only storeStones listed from a shared global feed, thinner overhead, but nobody in the room has handled the diamond, and a listing margin still applies.
The bench, directThe stone is cut or sourced in-house and priced at the bench, and the ring is made in the workshop on the same address. You deal with the desk that owns the stone.

That structural difference is the whole argument. It is why we invite you to bring any written Johannesburg quote for the same four grades: we price it like for like, in writing, and if we cannot beat it we say so.

The viewing room: one address, the whole chain

Prodiam sits at Suite F1W6, The Paragon, 1 Kramer Road, Bedfordview, with secure underground parking and viewings strictly by appointment, Monday to Friday, Saturdays on request. It is a working premises rather than a showroom: the Procut DCW cutting works and the SADPMR-inspected jewellery workshop operate on the same address.

Practically, that means you compare real stones on the daylight tray, watch how each one behaves under the loupe, check the GIA report number against the stone’s laser inscription, and then talk design with the people who will actually make the ring. Come in and ask questions if you are starting from zero; there is no obligation to buy anything.

And on the question Johannesburg buyers quietly ask first: the building is a secured diamond-industry premises, armed security, access control and underground parking, shared with the South African offices of GIA and EGL. Everything about visiting us, including how to book, is here.

The ring is made at the workshop on the same address and checked under loupe and microscope. Collect by appointment, or we deliver insured, with the certificate and a written valuation for insurance.

For buyers across Gauteng and beyond

Clients drive in from Sandton, Rosebank, Edenvale, the East Rand and Pretoria; Bedfordview sits just off the N3 interchange, minutes from most of Johannesburg. If you cannot come to the bench, the whole process runs remotely: live video viewings of the actual stones, the same firm written quote, and insured overnight delivery anywhere in South Africa.

If you are still choosing the stone itself, start with the live diamond search or read how to buy a diamond in South Africa first, then come back to the ring. And if you are comparing dealers, our guide to choosing a diamond dealer in Johannesburg tells you what to check, including on us.

Engagement rings in Johannesburg: common questions

Where can I buy an engagement ring in Johannesburg?

You have three broad routes in Johannesburg: a mall jeweller in Sandton, Rosebank or a centre near you; an online store shipping from a shared feed; or a cutting house selling direct. Prodiam is the third kind: a working diamond-bench in Bedfordview with a private viewing room, where the centre stone is cut or sourced in-house and the ring is made on the same address.

You view real diamonds on the daylight tray by appointment, agree the stone and design, and collect the finished ring from the same desk. The showroom polish is smaller; the stone budget goes into the stone.

Are engagement rings cheaper at a cutting house than at a mall jeweller?

For the same certified specification, materially, and the reason is structure rather than discounting. A mall ring reaches the counter through an importer, a wholesaler and the retail margin, and each layer is in the price you pay.

At a cutting house the stone is priced at the bench: we cut and polish diamonds ourselves on our Bedfordview bench, and the ring is made in the workshop on the same address, so the middle layers are simply absent. Bring any written Johannesburg quote and we will price the identical grades like for like, in writing, and if we cannot beat it we will say so plainly.

Can I see the diamonds before I commit?

Yes, and you should insist on it anywhere you shop. At the Bedfordview viewing room you sit with the actual stones on the daylight tray, compare them under the loupe and microscope, and check each diamond against its own GIA or EGL certificate, with the report number verifiable on GIA’s Report Check while you sit there.

Viewings are private and strictly by appointment, Monday to Friday, with Saturday viewings on request, and there is secure underground parking at The Paragon. No obligation attaches to a viewing.

How much does an engagement ring cost in Johannesburg?

There is no single figure, because the centre diamond sets most of the price and diamonds vary enormously with their carat, colour, clarity and cut. What we can tell you is how to keep the figure honest: the stone is priced against the international Rapaport benchmark, the grades are certified independently, and the quote is firm and in writing before any work begins.

Tell Darren your budget and he will show you honestly what it buys, with the certificates to prove it; we never publish invented "from" prices and we never steer you past your number.

How does the process work if I am proposing soon?

Start with the brief: the budget, the style, and your date. We respond within 24 hours, propose real certified stones inside your figure, and you view them in person in Bedfordview or by live video if you cannot get away.

Once you approve the stone and the design, the ring is built at the workshop on the same address, and we confirm the timeline at the brief and tell you honestly whether your date is achievable before you commit. Collection is by appointment, or the finished ring is delivered insured anywhere in South Africa.
