What a promise ring is, and what it is not
A promise ring says the engagement is coming, before you are ready to make it formal. Couples give them before a long stretch of study, a season of long distance, or simply because the moment for the proposal deserves to be its own moment later.
It is not a lesser engagement ring, and it is not a toy. The honest convention is that a promise ring sits a deliberate step below the engagement ring in size and spend, so the engagement keeps its weight when it arrives. What it must never be, in our view, is a fake: a stone nobody will certify, sold on sentiment.
Every promise ring we make carries a natural diamond with its own independent GIA or EGL certificate, whatever its size. The certificate is what lets the stone hold its value, and what makes the trade-up honest later.

The trade-up path: why the first ring is not money lost
The quiet problem with promise rings from a chain store is what happens two years later. The engagement ring arrives, the promise ring goes into a drawer, and the money it cost goes with it.
We built our upgrade programme for exactly this. When you are ready, trade the promise ring’s certified diamond in, pay the difference, and put the value into the engagement stone. Or keep the stone and have it reset into the engagement design on the same bench that made the first ring.
Either way, the certificate is what makes the arithmetic honest: the stone’s grades are on paper, so its trade-in value is a conversation about facts, not a jeweller’s shrug. It is the practical reason to start with a real, certified stone even at a modest size.

A solitaire, a bezel, a fine pavé band, in 18k white, yellow or rose gold or platinum, built around the stone on our Bedfordview bench. Simple settings suit promise rings best, and cost less.

Collection at the viewing room by appointment, or insured overnight delivery anywhere in South Africa, with the certificate and a written valuation for insurance.

What is a promise ring, and what does it mean?
A promise ring is a ring given before an engagement, as a serious statement of commitment when an engagement is intended but not yet right, because of age, study, distance or simply timing. It is not a trend invention; couples have exchanged commitment rings for centuries.
What it means is decided by the two of you: most couples treat it as "the engagement is coming", worn until the engagement ring replaces it. There are no rules about what it must look like, though most promise rings are deliberately simpler and smaller-stoned than the engagement ring that will follow, so the later ring keeps its moment.
What is the difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring?
Intent and scale, not construction. An engagement ring marks a formal agreement to marry and usually carries the couple’s most significant diamond. A promise ring marks commitment before that point, and is usually a step down in size and spend on purpose. Structurally they are made the same way on the same bench: a natural diamond, independently certified, in a precious-metal setting.

Which finger does a promise ring go on?
There is no fixed rule in South Africa. Many wear a promise ring on the left ring finger, the same finger the engagement ring will occupy, and move or retire it at the engagement. Others deliberately choose the right hand so the left ring finger stays open for the proposal. Both are common and neither is wrong: choose the hand that matches how public the two of you want the promise to be.
How much should a promise ring cost?
Meaningfully less than the engagement ring you intend to give later, and beyond that it is entirely your call. The price of a diamond promise ring is set by the stone, the carat, colour and clarity you choose, plus the metal and the making.
Because we cut diamonds in-house and sell direct, the stone is priced at a wholesale-direct level rather than a retail markup, which matters most at smaller budgets where every rand of value shows. Can the promise ring become the engagement ring later?
Yes, and this is the strongest reason to buy the promise ring from a cutting house rather than a chain store. Two honest routes: the stone from the promise ring can be reset into a new engagement design on our bench, or you can trade the diamond up through Prodiam’s upgrade programme, trade in, pay the difference, and the story carries over into a larger stone.
Either way the first ring is a step on the road rather than money left behind in a drawer.
Do promise rings have real diamonds, and are they certified?
Ours do, and only real ones. Prodiam works in natural diamonds exclusively, and the centre stone in a promise ring is independently certified by GIA or EGL like any other stone we sell, with the certificate supplied. At promise-ring sizes many jewellers quietly substitute cubic zirconia or uncertified melee; we do not.
A smaller certified natural diamond, honestly graded, is worth more than a larger stone nobody will vouch for, and it holds its trade-up value in our upgrade programme precisely because the certificate proves what it is.
