At four carats the market is small: about 1 117 natural diamonds in our sourcing window sit between 3.95 and 4.29 ct, against tens of thousands at one carat. What follows is how the price is built at this weight, why it climbs faster than the weight does, and how to get a firm figure for one specific stone. Natural diamonds only.
What a 4 carat diamond costs in South Africa
In our 6 November 2026 sourced-price sample, a 4 carat diamond at D colour had a guide price of R2 287 900 and a J around R1 077 000. The broader selection at H colour or better, VS2 or better and an Excellent cut filter had a guide price of R1 922 600. Figures include VAT and delivery for the loose diamond; a ring or other setting is additional.
The same spec varies enormously, and you should expect that. At J colour, the middle 80% of the sampled prices ran from R870 600 to R1 183 200. These are percentile boundaries, not the cheapest and most expensive available stones. A guide helps set a budget; the individual diamond needs its own quote.
What separates them is the part a grading report summarises rather than settles: how well the stone is actually cut and how much light it returns, where the inclusions sit and whether the eye can find them, how strongly it fluoresces, how the outline is proportioned, and how keenly that particular stone happens to be priced against the international trade benchmark on the day. Weight and colour are two inputs out of a dozen.
4 carat diamond price by colour
A fair colour comparison has to hold everything else still, so this is VS1 to VS2 clarity, an Excellent cut filter and no fluorescence. The weight band is 3.95–4.29 ct. Typical is the median of the captured sample: half the sampled prices are lower, half are higher. A limited sample is labelled separately. Moving from D to J changes the typical price by about R1 210 900.

Held at H colour within 3.95–4.29 ct. Cut and fluorescence can still vary in this selection. Ask to see the individual stone: an SI1 grade alone does not establish whether inclusions are visible. At this weight only a few dozen stones exist at each clarity grade, so several cells are limited samples of the lower-priced listings and adjacent grades can print out of order. Read this table as a rough guide and compare actual stones.

Dated price guidance from sourced listings. These figures were captured on 6 November 2026. They describe sampled prices, not stock held in Bedfordview or a guarantee that a particular stone remains available.
Use the typical price and middle-half range together when setting a budget. Where too few prices were returned, the table labels a limited sample and omits the range. Confirm the current price and availability before deciding.
No two of these diamonds are the same
A table like this describes a market, not a stone. Treat every figure as the shape of what is available at that spec, not a price list and not a promise. A grading report identifies the stone and its grades; the price appears in your written quote for the diamond you choose.
We benchmark every stone against the trade list before we put it in front of anyone, and we would rather lose a sale than sell you one we would not buy ourselves. Come and talk to us and we will often do better than the table, because a real stone is priced on its own merits.
Price sample captured 6 November 2026. Typical is a sample median; the middle-half band is the sampled 25th to 75th percentile. Limited samples use the lower-priced listings returned and should not be read as a market median. Guide figures are rounded up to the next R100.

Why four carats costs more per carat
Diamond prices do not scale with weight. A natural rough large enough to cut a clean four-carat stone is far rarer than one that yields a three, so the trade prices each carat higher as size goes up. In our dated sample an H colour stone came to roughly R301 300 a carat at three carats and R412 200 a carat at four, about 37% more per carat. The same jump happens again at five carats; our 5 carat price guide shows it.
How big a 4 carat diamond looks
Measured on real graded stones, a 4 carat round brilliant is about 10.1 mm across, against about 6.4 mm at one carat. Weight grows with volume, so the face-up size grows much more slowly than the carat figure. Cut decides how much of the weight you actually see: a deep stone carries weight underneath where it does nothing. Our diamond size guide shows other shapes at the same weight.
Compare 3.80 and 3.90 carats before the full four
Round weights carry a premium because buyers ask for them. A stone a little under four carats, at the same shape and grades, can cost noticeably less while looking almost identical on the hand. There is no fixed saving: compare the millimetre measurements, the appearance and the full price of the actual stones.
What moves the price of a 4 carat diamond
| Factor | How it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Colour | At four carats colour shows more than at one, and the spread between D and J in the table above runs to hundreds of thousands of rand. Compare the stone in your intended metal. |
| Clarity | Inclusions grow with the stone. A grade that is eye-clean at one carat may not be at four, so ask for photographs or a viewing. |
| Cut and shape | Cut decides how big and bright the stone looks. GIA’s overall cut grade applies to round brilliants; fancy shapes need their own assessment. |
| Weight threshold | Compare stones just under 4.00 ct at similar grades. |
| Exchange rate and VAT | The trade prices in US dollars, so the rand price moves with the exchange rate. Compare VAT-inclusive quotes. |
| Supply route | Cut in-house at Procut DCW or sourced to order from the certified trade. Compare complete quotes for matched stones. |
How to get your exact 4-carat figure
Open the diamond search to see landed rand prices at four carats, then send us the specification you want, or describe the look and your budget. We price one real stone, firm and in writing, VAT included. Check the GIA report yourself before you pay: at this size the grades on the paper are what the price is built on. Take it loose or have it set in a bespoke ring.

4 carat diamond price: common questions
How much does a 4 carat diamond cost in South Africa?
For 4 carat diamonds in South Africa, our 6 November 2026 sample had a median of R1 648 600 at H colour. The middle half of sampled prices was R1 516 000–R1 786 500. This compares 3.95–4.29 ct stones at VS1–VS2 clarity, with an Excellent cut filter and no fluorescence. VAT and delivery for the loose stone are included; a setting is additional. Confirm the current price for your chosen diamond.
Why does a 4 carat diamond cost so much more than a 3 carat?
Because price per carat rises with size, not only the total. In our dated sample an H colour stone worked out at roughly R301 300 a carat at three carats and R412 200 a carat at four, about 37% more for every carat. Stones of four carats and above are far scarcer in the rough, so each extra carat costs more than the one before.
How big is a 4 carat diamond?
A 4 carat round brilliant in our measured sample is about 10.1 mm across, against roughly 6.4 mm for a one-carat. Weight grows with volume, so four carats is not four times as wide: it is about 60% wider than a one-carat. Use the actual report for the stone you are considering.
How much is a 4 carat diamond ring in South Africa?
The centre stone is almost all of it. Use the loose-diamond guide above for the stone, then add the setting: metal, design, any side stones and making are quoted separately and depend on the design you choose. At this size the setting usually adds a small fraction of the stone’s price, so choose the stone first.
Is a 3.80 carat diamond better value than a full 4 carat?
It can be. Diamonds just under a round number are often priced below the full weight, but the saving depends on the two stones being compared. Compare a 3.80 or 3.90 carat option with a 4.00 carat at the same shape and grades, and check the millimetre measurements; the difference in size is usually hard to see.
Can I buy a 4 carat diamond remotely?
Yes. Send your specification and budget, ask for the stone’s laboratory report and available photographs or video, and confirm the VAT-inclusive written quote, availability and insured delivery before you commit. A ring also needs an agreed setting and production time.
