Five carats is one gram of diamond, and very few natural stones reach it: about 1 002 sit between 4.95 and 5.49 ct in our sourcing window. Below is what drives the price at this size, what a five-carat ring adds, and how to get a firm figure for one stone. Natural diamonds only.
What a 5 carat diamond costs in South Africa
In our 6 November 2026 sourced-price sample, a 5 carat diamond at D colour had a guide price of R4 023 900 and a J around R1 581 500. The broader selection at H colour or better, VS2 or better and an Excellent cut filter had a guide price of R3 213 400. Figures include VAT and delivery for the loose diamond; a ring or other setting is additional.
The same spec varies enormously, and you should expect that. At G colour, the middle 80% of the sampled prices ran from R2 674 500 to R3 636 100. These are percentile boundaries, not the cheapest and most expensive available stones. A guide helps set a budget; the individual diamond needs its own quote.
What separates them is the part a grading report summarises rather than settles: how well the stone is actually cut and how much light it returns, where the inclusions sit and whether the eye can find them, how strongly it fluoresces, how the outline is proportioned, and how keenly that particular stone happens to be priced against the international trade benchmark on the day. Weight and colour are two inputs out of a dozen.
5 carat diamond price by colour
A fair colour comparison has to hold everything else still, so this is VS1 to VS2 clarity, an Excellent cut filter and no fluorescence. The weight band is 4.95–5.49 ct. Typical is the median of the captured sample: half the sampled prices are lower, half are higher. A limited sample is labelled separately. Moving from D to J changes the typical price by about R2 442 400.

5 carat diamond price by clarity
Held at H colour within 4.95–5.49 ct. Cut and fluorescence can still vary in this selection. Ask to see the individual stone: an SI1 grade alone does not establish whether inclusions are visible. At this weight only a few dozen stones exist at each clarity grade, so several cells are limited samples of the lower-priced listings and adjacent grades can print out of order. Read this table as a rough guide and compare actual stones.

Dated price guidance from sourced listings. These figures were captured on 6 November 2026. They describe sampled prices, not stock held in Bedfordview or a guarantee that a particular stone remains available.
Use the typical price and middle-half range together when setting a budget. Where too few prices were returned, the table labels a limited sample and omits the range. Confirm the current price and availability before deciding.
No two of these diamonds are the same
A table like this describes a market, not a stone. Treat every figure as the shape of what is available at that spec, not a price list and not a promise. A grading report identifies the stone and its grades; the price appears in your written quote for the diamond you choose.
We benchmark every stone against the trade list before we put it in front of anyone, and we would rather lose a sale than sell you one we would not buy ourselves. Come and talk to us and we will often do better than the table, because a real stone is priced on its own merits.
Price sample captured 6 November 2026. Typical is a sample median; the middle-half band is the sampled 25th to 75th percentile. Limited samples use the lower-priced listings returned and should not be read as a market median. Guide figures are rounded up to the next R100.

What a five-carat stone costs per carat
At five carats each carat costs more than at any smaller size on this site. In our dated sample an H colour stone came to roughly R412 200 a carat at four carats and R510 600 a carat at five, about 24% more per carat. The reason is the rough: very few natural crystals are big and clean enough to cut a five-carat stone, and colour and clarity become harder to find at the same time. For the size below, see the 4 carat price guide.
How big a 5 carat diamond looks
Measured on real graded stones, a 5 carat round brilliant is about 11.0 mm across, against about 6.4 mm at one carat. That is a stone that reads from across a room. An oval, pear or marquise of the same weight covers a longer line on the finger, while a cushion or Asscher holds more of its weight in depth. Our diamond size guide compares shapes at the same weight.
A 5 carat diamond ring: what the setting adds
At this size the ring is designed around the stone. A heavy stone needs a setting that holds it securely and sits well on the hand: six claws or a bezel for a round, claws that protect the points of a pear or marquise, and enough metal in the band to carry the weight. The setting is quoted separately from the diamond and depends on the metal, the design and any side stones; at five carats it is a small share of the total. See our bespoke engagement rings for how a commission works.
What moves the price of a 5 carat diamond
| Factor | How it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Colour | The single biggest lever at this weight: the gap between the top and bottom colours in the table above runs to millions of rand. |
| Clarity | Few stones exist at each grade, so compare actual diamonds, not only the grade. Inclusions are larger in a large stone. |
| Cut and shape | Proportions decide face-up size and brightness. Round brilliants have a GIA cut grade; fancy shapes need their own assessment. |
| Laboratory report | At this price the report is part of the value. Check the number and inscription yourself. |
| Exchange rate and VAT | Priced in US dollars in the trade, so the rand price moves with the exchange rate. Compare VAT-inclusive quotes. |

5 carat diamond price: common questions
How much does a 5 carat diamond cost in South Africa?
For 5 carat diamonds in South Africa, our 6 November 2026 sample had a median of R2 553 000 at H colour. The middle half of sampled prices was R2 255 000–R2 635 400. This compares 4.95–5.49 ct stones at VS1–VS2 clarity, with an Excellent cut filter and no fluorescence. VAT and delivery for the loose stone are included; a setting is additional. Confirm the current price for your chosen diamond.
How much is a 5 carat diamond ring in South Africa?
Start with the stone, because it is nearly all of the price: use the dated guide above. The setting is added on top, and depends on the metal, the design, any side stones and the making. At five carats a well-made setting is a small share of the total, so choose the diamond first and design the ring around it.
How much does a 1 gram diamond cost?
One gram is five carats, so this page is the answer: see the dated sample above. A one-gram natural diamond is a large, rare stone, and its price depends heavily on colour, clarity and cut.
How big is a 5 carat diamond?
A 5 carat round brilliant in our measured sample is about 11.0 mm across, against roughly 6.4 mm for a one-carat. It is about 70% wider than a one-carat, not five times as wide, because weight grows with volume. Elongated shapes such as oval and pear look larger face-up at the same weight.
Why does a 5 carat diamond cost more per carat than a 4 carat?
Because large rough is scarcer at every step up. In our dated sample an H colour stone worked out at roughly R412 200 a carat at four carats and R510 600 a carat at five, about 24% more for each carat.
Is a 5 carat diamond a good investment?
Buy it because you want the stone, not as a guaranteed investment. A diamond can hold value, but resale prices sit below retail and depend on the individual stone, its report and the market at the time. A well-documented natural stone with a recognised laboratory report is easier to value and sell later.
Can I buy a 5 carat diamond remotely?
Yes, but treat it as you would any very large purchase. Ask for the laboratory report and video of the actual stone, check the report number yourself, and confirm the written VAT-inclusive quote, availability and insured delivery before you pay. Many buyers at this size also arrange a private viewing.
